RPM too high for road speed?

Post by chasesdragons »

Hi all,
Sorry for the endless mither; I am still getting used to my first Peugeot after BMWs and Mercs...

My 1998 1.9td manual saloon is doing about 2700-2800 rpm at about 70mph, 5th. I am sure the Mercs run 2200 at 70 in top.

Can you confirm please?

25mph per 1000 rpm is correct for the 1.9 IIRC, and I agree it feels a bit short. (I think it's 27.5 on the HDi 90 (this is a good match) and more again on the HDi 110.)

If by top you mean 6th

FWIW the 407 does about 35 per 1000 in 6th but it's so long you really have to be doing at least 70.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

My 2.0. Hdi is displaying about 30 mph per 1000rpm but I think its exaggerating, the 1.9 is definitely lower geared though.

110's are about 30.5 mph/1000 in 5th, 2.2's a tiny bit higher.
My 6-speed is geared the same as Rich's, but it's definitely usable from 60, (less if you're gentle). :cheesy:
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

2700rpm at 70mph is correct for the 1.9. (26mph per 1000rpm in 5th). I had a 306 1.9TD saloon and it would return 65+mpg at continuous running on motorways at 70.

THAT is what I'm concerned about. Is it still going to give me decent mpg all else being equal? I do 95 miles a day, 90% fast motorway. I have seen a thread on installing an hdi gearbox on an XUD9. It is on the cards if need be.
