Just denotes trim levels I believe... My semi-mux D9 GLX had black instruments, but my friends full-mux D9 SE has white instruments...

White dials were mostly fitted on the run-out models, but from 2003 it's more or less pot luck which you get.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Thanks doggy and fattail95...
The car is a lhd 2.0 Hdi estate with Navtech that's done 190,000 km so my guess this is probably the last of the 406 line.
Looking at the difference between here in France and just ebay UK you lucky people are spoiled for choice/price considering the pugs were manufactured here!
I'd appreciate any further advice as I have a week or so to decide...

As far as I can recall the very last 406's were only in three flavours: S, SE and Exec and I think only the S's got the white dials, silver-ish centre console and dark grey/glossy 'wood' infill trims to the dash and doors.

I think the exec stayed as it always was throughout. Pretty much.

Oh and the last few models all had 16" wheels and fake exhaust tips (which looked like straight-exit but actually pointed down underneath). Oh and the Chrome panel under the front grille.
