I went over to Telford last night to pick up some parts from gumby (thanks again mate) & it was good to put a face to a name
on the way back I was calculating in my head my m.p.g's & was well chuffed, I was approching 550 miles to 40 litres (61mpg) with 59 miles left on the range when.
I sputtered to a halt on the side of the A42 two miles from a junction at 10.15 pm , bloody french cars.
Note to self stick to getting 55 m.p.g's & not getting stranded & have a nice four mile night hike

Silly boy. Yeah, I also had issues with my sticking gauge on the 6, though I realised before anything like this happened. I always read the gauge by miles done since the last fill up - safer!
Its a kick in the bum when you think you have a few miles left and then conk out....
My old exec would go down to '--' before I would even think about putting diesel in ( I've done 20 miles before with this displaying ) but I'm not sure about the GLX, I'll have to check it...

Both of mine have regularly done 20 miles or so after dropping to '---' and I've never run out. I think the trick is carrying on if you know it read 30 or 40 odd miles just before going to zero. If you're not sure, don't chance it.

it is a check I carry out on all my cars. Chuck a couple of gallons of fuel in the boot, and go for a drive on quiet roads until it runs out. The two cars I never actually run out on were the 306, and now this one, the 406. They both did over thirty miles with the light on, and, to be honest, I got bored and went home. Unlike older cars, the fuel tanks are shaped in such a way that the gauge will not be accurate in terms of fuel content, only in terms of the height of the float in the tank.
Something I'd never do is let it run out!
I done it in my Mondeo once after I went up a hill quickly with little in the tank. All the fuel went to the back and the system filled up with air. It's never quite been as smooth since.
