Decided to buy a hdi estate!

Post by peugeot30v6 »

Well, last week my Volvo V40 blew an engine and have decided to replace it with a 406 HDI Estate. I have heard that the hdi engine is better than the petrol. Is there anything wrong with the hdi. I am having alot of trouble with my V6 petrol and I dont want to have to go through the problems that I have with my petrol 406. This one is a 2003 406 HDI 110 with full service history but unlike my petrol with only 82000miles this one has got 147000miles!

The HDIs are good engines, the 2.0 110 doesn't really give any serious problems with the engine, turbos are strong, the coolant system doesn't give any trouble and its overall very smooth to drive.

The crankshaft pulley can fail causing a noise that sometimes sounds like the engine will blow up, they also have a dual mass flywheel which adds to the cost of changing a clutch.

We've had my 110 in the family for 8 years now (65k miles worth), and its been almost faultless. A fuel line blew out once as it was rubbing against the engine cover, which were replaced with the improved replacements. DMF needs doing now, but my father who was the previous owner used to do a lot of stop start short journeys driving which caused that issue. Thats the only two things that have ever gone wrong (besides the usual maintenance items, which you expect), its been our most reliable car ever and with a remap they do go very well, very smooth to drive and has loads of torque. Unlike the 2.2, it can get excellent fuel economy (north of 65mpg is driven very carefully) which is awesome. Very simple engine which has loads of space to work on, and there is no DPF to worry about either :) Especially with MOT regulations tightening up, I wouldn't be surprised if they started using gas analyzers for diesels soon.

Its a good car - the 110 is the best all rounder. If the car is priced around £1100 - £1300 then that seems to be the going rate for a late model executive, maybe a bit less for the mileage which may be considered high but we diesel drivers know its nearly run in.....

Drove it today from the dealer back home and was great driving a manual again. Got it up to 75mph in no time. 100 times better than my old volvo
