Hands up who's Headlamp Washers still work?

Post by Welly »

Just talking about this and it got me thinking that my 406 h/l washers never worked in all the time I had it and it seemed a common failure point. We used to discuss on here about whether they were actually any use too?

Discuss......

Input restricted to Exec* owners I guess.

*and maybe some GLX

*or late SE's

Mine work, as did the original Dogmobile's. Never had a problem with them.
I avoid using them whenever possible due to the amount of fluid they use. (I tend to turn the headlights off at traffic lights to clean the screen and so on).

A switch to disable them when desired is on my list of, "Thingz that'll never get done", along wiv.....

One to disable the front fogs so I can use the back one when conditions demand with looking like a prat.
One to disable the auto wipers to give you a choice of standard intermittent at times.

Mine still work i drove over the pump once and a replacement from a coupe was sourced and fitted, other than the pump there is very little to go wrong with the washers, although its debatable how useful they are, ive never thought while driving my headlights are getting a bit dirty best give them a clean.

Only you can drive over a washer pump and break it :cheesy:

Due to the fact that the copious amounts of screen wash that they dish out is inversely proportional to their effectiveness...I pulled the pump relay out. My screen wash bottle seems to last forever now,

Mine didn't work when I bought the car but I got them working but wish I'd left alone due to the amount of screenwash they use and to be honest I can't see how a squirt of water can clean the headlamps properly,an old BMW of mine actually had wipers on the headlamps and they worked a treat,i think I will pull the fuse on the pugs washers.

Exactly, the typical road grime that gets on the headlamps dries when the lights are on and a quick squirt of screenwash does nothing. Little wipers are best like the old Saab's but I guess no-one wants to see them nowadays.

Very 80's.....

Last car I had with them was a 24V Carlton, worked perfectly. The Omega that followed it had high pressure washers that blew the nozzles off.

the '7 has washers -- legal requirement because it has HIDs... so there's an MOT fail awaiting. When they operate my first instinct is still 'ey up, what's up wit' lights'.

I had them on my old Exec, and when I replaced the front bumper with one from a 'lesser' model I couldn't be arsed to change over all the plumbing through the bumper, fitting the jets etc.
I did have to fit the 'lesser' models washer bottle as the execs had 2 holes for pumps to fit in, only a 10 minute job.

Do I miss the headlight washers?

No.

Mine never failed, though my mum's C4 never had them working in the first place...

407's still work - even better, they squirt the headlamps twice!
