Taking a trip to Stuttgart
Well Saturday I am leaving the U.K for a trip to visit my Grandfather in Stuttgart. This will be the first long trip in my HDI. When I bought the car the previous owner did not have any history on the cambelt replacement, how do I check if the belt is ok? Jouney is 9 hours from Brighton to Stuttgart so I dont want any mechanical issues.

The 406 has a big tank - that's all.....
You could get almost there and back on a tank if you drive carefully.......
I filled up my Mums Fabia and it cost £40
, I filled up my lorry and it cost £365..

Re: Taking a trip to Stuttgart
You can't check to see if a belt will be okay. It may look perfect but it could be.. It will be well past it!
It needs to be replaced after 150k!
£200 will get you a Cambelt, water pump, tensioner, aux belt and a crank pully.
As winter approaches its more likely then ever that it's going to fail.
As per your other thread. If it hasn't had a service in 14k you really need to get one done.

Re: Taking a trip to Stuttgart
I think the interval is supposed to be 5 years or 96k.
Therefore strictly speaking I suppose it ought to be on its third cambelt already!
You'd have to be very unlucky to have any trouble with it, but if you don't have service history then it's just another thing that needs doing if nothing else then for peace of mind. So I guess it comes down to how nervous you feel!

Well the car was perfect and made it here very well. Had to stop a couple of times to get wiper fluid, I think its leaking and I also need new wipers. But other than that it was a breeze. Really loving my hdi. I will get the belt changed when I get back. Thanks

Re: Taking a trip to Stuttgart
At 150k I'd have thought someone in the past would have changed the cambelt, but as others have said for under £300.00 at a indy
or under £150 if you do the job yourself. Unless you have proof of a change I would do it for piece of mind
& I stick with 5 years / 96k too.
It's a 15 gallon tank & depending on your flavour of 406 can get up to 65mpg on a run, best I managed up to now is 850 miles to a tank full
but I get a flinchy bum now since I ran out of fuel on the way back from gumbys a few weeks back
