Want some new Number Plates but how?

Post by Welly »

What's it like ordering number plates on line these days? do I need 6 guarantors, my inside leg measurement and surrender my passport for 5 years or is it quite painless?

Or is it best to pop into Halfords*

My rear plate is de-laminating and the front one stone chipped to buggery.

The plates I had on the Pug were "illegal" in that they didn't have the BS number and the manufacturers postcode because I bought them from ebay. Fully legal in every other way (standard font, size, colours, border etc, all spot on). Never had an issue from the law and went through several MOTs like that (as far as I know it still is like that unless John didn't like the Welsh Dragon flags :supafrisk: ).

So why spend 3 times the amount at Halfrauds and go through the hassle just to get a BS number and a postcode that no-one takes any notice of anyway?

Halfords plates are a bit expensive but they are good quality.
The Halfords logo and BS number are lightly etched into the plastic on the plate so are very faint.

You need the V5 and ID to order number plates unless you are trade like myself.
Any motor factors will make up plates for you.

Dai, the number plates on the 406 estate are still the same....I do not have issue with the Welsh flag :cheesy:
Still passed the mot twice for me as well :cheesy:

bought my last lot off ebay. fully marked up etc, so legal to look at but they don't do the checks, which makes the sellers dodgy, but not the plates.

Still cant argue with a tenner for a pair including fixings.

I too bought my last two sets of the Bay, with no problems. All the markings are there and they cost £11 a pair.

The ebay ones sound iffy with no documents, this is exactly the thing they were trying to cut down on i.e. anyone strolling into a shop and getting plates made which may or may not be legit

I don't 'do' ebay so I'm above reproach.

I don't like the idea of e-mailing a copy of my V5 to an on-line company (if that's what's required?) so yes dropping into a MF with a fist full of paperworm is probably the thing to do......which has also made the whole process less appealing too :(

At least it's not like Croatia where you keep the same crumpled plate for evAr.

Totally useless to you I know but the only place we can get number plates here is..... the police. Apparently they're made by convicts. I've no idea how I'd go about getting another made up if I mangled one (the plate on the front of the yoyo came pre-mangled but we had to go to the cops to register a new owner where I asked about it and they reckoned it's good enough) It's probably weeks of paperwork, during which the car is useless. Or maybe they can just give you another set there and then, change all the paperwork and charge accordingly.

I can remember back in the day going into my local motor factors buying a blank backing plate and then buying the individual numbers and letters and making the plates up yourself. :)

I can remember being Branch Manager at a Motor Factors, and making a number plate that said "Keep Out"

Looked good on my office door

Cheers for that, they look like they'll be spot on. I wonder if they'll deal with me direct rather than ebay.....they'll get the shock of their lives when an actual human customer rings up and wants to pay actual monehs direct - that'll f*ck up their system for sure.
