Anyone tried to buy a cheap car latley?

Post by Bailes1992 »

So a fair few things started to go wrong with the KA and the other half has lost trust in it so it was time for a change.
We went out this morning with a budget of £2000 to buy something less than 10 years old with less than 100,000miles on the clock. Preferably no bigger than a Focus and preferably not a diesel. The car needed to be purchased from a trader as we wanted to pay by credit card.
Easy? I thought it would be.

So today we went to 21 garages and traveled 207miles trying to find a car.

First car that tickled our pickle was a 05 Plate Megane 1.6VVT Dynamique. It was in silver up for £1,300 with 64k on the clock.
It was a bit rough, but it was the cheaper end of things. I opened the bonnet and luckily just popped the engine cover off for a nose. The entire engine was covered in duct tape. Confused I started to peel it back and found that 3 out of 4 of the bolts that hold the coil packs down had been sheared and someone had glued the oil packs down and stuck some duct tape over the top for good measure.

Second car was another 05 plate Megane. This time it was a 2.0 VVT Dynamique. It was in much better condition cosmetically and had covered 44k. It also had full service history and one owner from new. Up for £1,995 it was the top end of our budget but it was all looking good until the test drive. Blue smoke on start up and overrun. Huff. The salesman tried to convince us it was just because it had been standing.

Then we found a small dealer who had 2 Clio's in. A 55 plate 1.4 and a 53 plate 1.4 automatic. Both had just shy of 70k on the clock and both were up for £1,195. The other half had an automatic clio as her first car and has always wanted another. We both agreed that if it was decent we could stretch the 10 year old rule.
The automatic Clio had early signs of head gasket failure with mayo in the coolant bottle and the bottom of the oil filler which the salesman tried to cop off as being 'condensation'. Condensation in the header tank? I should hope so, but it's the oil in the header tank I'm more worried about.
After that I opened the bonnet of the 55 plate Clio, identified a couple of oil leaks and the horrible pushy nature of the salesman made me walk away.

Between cars we visited a few other garages, nothing taking our fancy.

We dropped into another dealer who had just taken P/X an 05 plate Clio with 92k on the clock which was also suffering with head gasket failure.

By this time it was 2pm and we had left the house at 8:30am. I was tired and was going to throw the towel in but the missus insisted a fight through it.

I ended up in Merthyr Tydfil which is without a doubt the worst place in the world.
I ended up some quiet side street and found an 07 Astra Estate with 140k on the clock, recent timing belt and clutch change. It was a 1.3CDTi in White in Life trim up for £1,995. The basic of the basic but it was very very tidy. I was about to take it for a test drive and was a bit concerned that he didn't give me trade plates.
"Don't you have trade plates?"
"You're insured on our policy, don't worry!"
"Er... but there's no tax or MOT. Surley I should have trade plates?"
"You're fully comp on your own insurance arent you?"
I shook my head, returned the keys and left. :frown:

Really starting to loose my temper and in the middle of god knows where I came across a lovely 58 plate Renault Megane estate (contrary to popular belief I didn't actually go looking for a Megane. They were just everywhere.). It was a 1.4, pretty basic spec in light gold. It had 70k on the clocks and looked very tidy. I took it out for a drive and was very impressed by it. It was a bit of a gutless slouch but it pulled through the revs happily.
I got back and asked to look over the paperwork and seen on the HPI report that there had been two MOT's within 2 weeks of eachother. The first one showing 126k on the clock, the second just 70k.

So after loosing my temper a bit I drove back to Bridgend and thought I'd drop into one last place.
At the back of the lot, still unprepared was a 2006 Citreon C3 1.4 Desire. In black with 111k on the clock. The mileage was high, my missus wasn't too keen on it. I decided to take a punt and pop out for a test drive and it drove superb. Usual french sloppy gearchange, the clutch was a bit high and it stunk of smoke but it had no knocks, no bangs and no smoke. It had full service history at a local Citreon/Peugeot specialist and was in superb condition bar 3 fag burns on the drivers seat.
I threw the keys at Becca and insisted that she take it out for a spin, and when she got back she loved it!
Stuck an offer in at £1,200 and pick it up Monday. 8)

I would have thought £2000 would have been a healthy budget to purchase a 10 year old motor, we had no strict rules on what we can and can't have. But I come to the conclusion that most cars dealers are selling in our price ranges and buckets of rubbish, that first Megane I almost purchased. It was just by luck that I popped the engine cover off.

So yeah, we have a PSA car back in the house. 8)

Have fun changing the oil and filter :cheesy:

To get at the oil drain plug you have to take off a bracket that covers it up ...unless someone removed it, because it's a real pain.
The oil filter housing will be full to the brim so make sure you have an oil tray under it and some cleaner....there are 2 types of oil filter fitted.

I don't trust car dealers anymore,
sometimes buying private.seems to be better.,

The 207 igot off a supposebly good trader, and it turned out to be a nightmare,
it came with 12mth mot. full service..
sounded good at the time.,

Jasper5 soon confirmed it had never seen a service, ithink the oil filter had been tight'end up with 'Thors hammer(by the garage or last owner).
it still wont come off to this day, :(

It'll be getting a full service next weekend and I'll be sending it in somewhere for new belts.
Thanks for the heads up, I'll look forward it it.
I was planning on doing 2 oil changes within a week or two of each other to give it a bit of a flush.
Is it worth changing the coil packs? I couldn't see any history of them ever being changed in 111k.

I couldn't believe the audacity of the salesman. I'm no car expert but I like to think I know a fair bit, and even when you make that obvious they try and brush blatant faults off as nothing.

Can you replace the oil filter 'holder?' at all? I'd hate to be driving around with an old oil filter.

Pity you don't want a diesel, you can buy a half decent C5 for about £500 with the bombproof 2.0. 8 valve Hdi engine which will give 50mpg+

Have a look on ebay there are thousands of cars on there, dealers also sell them there.

She does 4-5 miles a day. She would ruin a diesel.
Also insurance was an issue. She pays £350 for the KA.
The 2.0 Megane was pushing it at £700 a year.

Low mileage won't offend an 8 valve hdi, its the DPF that suffers, the 8 valve doesn't have one. Might be a bit big though. How about a 205 2.0. 8 valve, that should be cheap enough to insure, although my C5 is only £140 per year.

thats the part that wont come off, someones overtightend it,im having it all replaced soon,

Your doing the right thing by the oil changes, dont use any engine flush treatments/snake oils ive heard some horror stories on people flushing these engines.

the coil packs aint cheap. iirc there over £100 notes for a good one,
there is cheap ones out there but id avoid them,

I'm surprised you'd drive around dropping in on dealers, I'd prefer a short list obtained from that internet. I can tell a lot by looking at photo's and then ringing up for more info.

Anyway hopefully you've found something decent, it sounds that way, what will happen to the KA? it also sounds like you got almost all the dealer bullshit thrown in too; smoking engines, HGF's, dubious insurance....all perfectly normal :cheesy:

There's no fun looking online! I actually did look online ad phoned a few dealers but when I got there everything was a bucket of sh*t.
I couldn't believe the rubbish dealers were trying to sell as good quality motors.
I come across the C3 by luck. Hopefully it will be a good motor. All the reviews are good, very little reliability issues.
The KA is going to be fixed to some extent. I have a new master cylinder coming to get it driveable. Going to use it as a track car.

I certainly agree that the used car market is full of pratfalls. When I bought my Fiesta some years ago, I saw some real lemons advertized as 'immaculate', which I wouldn't even describe as 'good condition for year'. As for the 406, most of those I looked at had dings and dents, high-ish mileage and all kinds of other problems, and to me, most of the sellers were asking way over the odds prices. The one I ended up with was described as 'tatty'. It has a dent in every panel which I will sort out gradually, and once past the original non-start problem has proved to be very reliable, a nice runner, and, for a car of its type and very cheap to run. Relatively low mileage, and the seller was asking a reasonable amount.
As to buying from a dealer, I never have, and probably never will because when I talk to the owner, most of them will give honest answers as to why they are selling.

Just thinking, I've bought 4 cars direct from dealers (and viewed many more) in the last 9 years and without fail as soon as the salesman gets an idea that you know about cars then you start getting the cold shoulder treatment; like you've caught them out

Seems the ideal customer is a hapless type who knows nothing about cars and hangs on the salesman's every word. My Nephew tried his hand at selling used cars at a main dealer and there was all sorts going on between the salesmen including bribery, collusion, bullying and targeting folk's trade-in's for financial benefit. T'was an eye-opener and he only stuck it for a few months.

I have bought all my cars for the last 10 years or so via ebay and normally pay not much more than £500 for them, occasionally less . The dearest was my 406 Hdi estate which I bought nearly 5 years ago and paid £950 for, I have covered 45,000 miles in that time and nothing has gone seriously wrong with it, its now on 234,000. My C5 I paid £550 for and had to do some work on it but that was about 4 years ago and that's still going strong at just over 200k.

If you like that sort of car and can do you own repairs they will cost very little to run. Most parts for either car are available on ebay for very little money, if something expensive goes wrong there are plenty of cars being broken and most parts are also very cheap. The road tax for both cars is £145.00.
