Replacing back plates - help!

Post by fattail95 »

Hey guys,

Got a new (well refurb'd) set of rear back plates for the 406 as my current ones are rusty, going to attempt it next week but could do with a few pointers before I go ahead with it. Does the hub actually need replacing? Both of my rear wheel bearings are fine with no noise at all and I'd rather keep those OEM units if possible. But if I cant reuse my current ones, where is best to get a set from?

Thanks,
Ben.

Follow this excellent video made by our own FarmerPug....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgOw5SFb6J0

You can refit the old bearing and hub if you have carefully removed the old one using the puller....clean the shaft with sandpaper and lightly grease it before you refit the hub.

One mistake that was made in the video was.... on refitting the hub or fitting a new one you should fit the handbrake shoes BEFORE THE HUB IS FITTED as you will have lots more room to fit the handbrake shoes and therefore make the job a whole lot easier.

Excellent video, very helpful! Might as well get a new pair of hubs while I'm there - where should I get them from? Do they need to be genuine?

Hi Ben, can I also add that the handbrake will almost certainly be seized into the back plate too - this give you 2 options..
1) Do what I did on the first one and try to beat the handbrake connector back through the plate with a hammer on a 7mm socket, which worked eventually. On the second back plate the hammer just glanced off the socket and smashed my ABS sensor to bits.....
2) Buy 2 new side handbrake cables and unclip the old ones from the centre 'T' piece underneath and remove them along with the back plate...... 8)

Some claw type hub pullers have 'fat feet' so may not go behind the hub enough to get a decent purchase to remove it ( there isn't a big gap behind the hub/bearing ) so maybe invest in a pair of new hubs from a local factor, around £45 each.

Absolutely change the hubs; they're not expensive. I got mine off eBay (they were new parts, and not Peugeot originals).

Ben, how badly rusted are the back plates?
Mine looked pretty rough until I attacked them with the wire brush attachment on a cordless drill, they cleaned up very well and then had a coat of high temp engine paint for preservation. If the mounting points for the shoes are fubar'd the nut, bolt and washer method is a cheap and lasting fix.
Apart from an aching back it only cost about a fiver.

Here's the results after shot blasting and powder coating, they were rusty as hell and very manky beforehand but as Gareth said there was good metal underneath and they came out beautifully 8) I made sure the mating face was masked off, is there anywhere else that needs paint removing before I fit it? I remember someone saying about it rubbing the disk or something if it wasn't done...

All in all it was £80, £20 per back plate from Ade and £20 a side to have it shot blasted and painted, Peugeot wanted £180 for the pair! Calipers being refurb'd too in anthracite/gun metal at the same time so I'll post up pics when it's done :)

They look fantastic! I think they'll only rub if they're deformed due to rust, I doubt yours will do this. I dunno where else needs rubbing back to bare, maybe where the shoes sit but it's probably not worth the bother.

Thanks! I would be surprised if these had deformed, there is literally no give in them at all so I should be fine on that score :D Looking forward to getting it all done, the rear brakes on this car have never been spot on, so thought I'd do it all at once properly.

They certainly do look very good Ben, my only concern would be refitting the handbrake shoes without scratching the nice new paint :cheesy:

You might find the handbrake cable a little snug to fit with the new paint but it won't be as tight as getting the old one out but you won't need to worry as your replacing the original backplates.
