Post by benjhill »

Oh the joys my 406 needs to come off the road for about a month i was driving home last night in the pissing rain with a biker following me long story short is i had to come to a stop very very fast due to a group of wild sheeps haha being a biker myself i knew the fella behind me wasnt going to slow down as fast as me so to avoid him hitting me i mounted the grass verge and let him have the space needed , all was good he went on his way i dug my car out the grass but then on my travels my steering wheel started knocking turning right and i have a loud bang coming from the front end NOT GOOD! the car is on the ramp this morning already so i need to get another car on the road today while that is being sorted so ive bought an...... 806 DT ..... yes an 806 my pal had it in his yard been stood for months fired first turn of the key off its own battery i was amazed shame its an auto it drives like a car hopefully wont have it long but the 406 feels quite errm drunk its pulling left and right , not good.

I think you did the right thing as you could've hurt the biker. Shame your car took the punishment though, what about speaking to your insurance?

Hi sorry to hear that, hope you get it all sorted soon & glad that everyone concerned was OK 8) .
Just noticed you sig, you can get 160 bhp at the flywheel but 410 lbt, that's 2.2 torque.
If you manage it you'll need a heavy duty clutch :cheesy:
Best of luck with the project DDD.

Got a few bits and bobs to go on to try and take it close to 2.2 spec , so fingers crossed she produces the results im looking for if not ive got a 2.2 in bits i will drop the lump into the 90 once ive worked out why it wont fire up , the whole front end is off my 90 at the second looks like ive done the front left suspension set up in good and proper!

Sounds like you did the right thing given the situation - well done. I'm sure puggy will be okay with a little love! With regards to your tuning goals, you'll struggle to get 410lb-ft of torque reliably from both the DW10 and the DW12 with acceptable wear rates and longevity (410lb-ft is 560nm ), that is not even tuned 2.2 territory (typically remapped to 180hp/420nm/309lb-ft, still over 100lb-ft away from your goal even on the 2.2, but can still be pushed a little further with mods on the stock internals). You'd just about manage that torque with a 3.0l BMW 530d (~405lb-ft after remapping) which is an inline 6! Realistically if you're sticking with stock internals you'll happily push 160hp (I'm running just shy of 150hp at the moment) but torque wise I'd expect a maximum of 400nm reliably without serious modifications (stonger rods etc.) You'll need a new high pressure pump (probably the R70 from the 2.2), an uprated fuel pressure sensor to be able to accurately measure the higher pressures (this will need calibration), as well as a heavy duty paddle clutch to put it to the road. I'm not sure the max torque rating of the 90's gearbox either, but I'm not sure it would stand up to that huge torque figure particularly without a DMF or heavy duty flywheel to smooth the torque surges at low revs.

I had a tuned 90. It was hard work with such a short gearbox. Often you'd end up skipping gears and within no time at all it was hitting its governor in 5th gear.
