Update.
Filled it up today, 801 miles on the trip recorder, 71 litres to fill it, (I've put 78 litres in one of these before), so 800 miles easily, possibly 900 at a push.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)
I must admit that this Hdi estate is the first modern Peugeot I have had for any length of time, the only other one was a diesel 404 some years ago.
I have run hydropnumatic Citroens for the last 30 years, starting with the CX and ending with XMs and they were brilliant cars for comfort and space but the C5 is a bit of a disappointment, rides well and is big but nothing like as nice to drive as the 406.
I regularly get an indicated 60mpg + on a long run and an average of 50mpg+ in the summer and maybe just under 50mpg in the winter, that coupled with a moderately good ride and far better handling, visibility and reliability make the 406 the best all rounder I have ever driven.
I paid £950 for it on ebay 5 years ago (a lot for me) but I have covered about 55,000 miles in it now with no serious problems and the car has done a total of 242k miles. When I replace it I will be looking for one about half that price.
That's pretty good going Jon, my best is 928miles but I did run out on the way back from gumby6371's place ,
If anyone's interested back in 2002 a Peugeot 406 110 hi saloon held the world record for the most miles travelled on one tank of fuel
1459.16 miles on one tank , yes you read that right no mods std, as it left the factory.
That's over 92mpg
Gotta love the 406 hdi
2002 110 HDi estate, Rapier in monaco blue! ( found quite a bit more power ) SOLD I've sorted the airbag light
1998 3.0 V6 SE coupe in Diablo Red ( my baby ) sold
2006 206 1.4 16v sport in Aegean blue ( wife's shopping trolley )
I believe it was done on Aussie outback roads or something similar, bang straight roads with little to no elevation change. Get it up to optimum speed for economy, engage cruise and away you go.
My 2.2 regularly indicated 900+MPG on the way down the hill I live on (admittedly it was in the low teens on the way back up)
1996 1.9 TD LX (Gone but not forgotten)
2003 2.2 HDI SE
