iam back!!

Post by omega »

did you miss me?

well after my old 2.1 bit the dust I decided I wanted a 3.0 so yesterday went up to Shropshire and picked up a 1997 d8 2 owner 145000 mile red 4 door v6.
its been very looked after drives very nice.electric mirror switch is dodgy and its got horrible brown leather[I wish I hadn't scrapped my nice black leather out my 2.1]
to be honest though iam a bit disappointed it just dosnt go like stink like I expected it to,it pulls 5th gear from about 30mph and sits nicely at 70ish I just expected a bigger kick in the pants.
but last night I took it till my private race track and it goes like stink from 80- 140mph very nice just wish it went like that from 0-70 maybe I need to rev it a bit more.
then this morning after dropping the wife of shopping on the way home there was a big bang and now I have a nice big chip on the windscreen

Hi Nigel, nice to hear from you again.
I had a manual 3.0 Omega that was very similar - from 80 to 140 is was really impressive but at normal UK higway speeds it just didn't seem to fly like you would hope.
It was largely this realisation that persauded me turbo diesels were worth a try.

Swap it for a VVT 211 bhp version - (no idea if that's even possible).

I guess the best source of info is the toupe forum.

Replacing the ES9J4 with the ES9J4S is indeed possible. But I gather it's a *massive* undertaking.

You'd need the engine, gearbox, fuel injectors, coils, wiring loom, ECU, BSI, dials, throttle position sensor, exhaust system (complete with at least the front set of catalytic converters and the associated lambda sensors)... etc, etc.

Ecosse Peugeot offers a V6 conversion for the 406 - they charge "from £6,000 (inc VAT)". It doesn't mention whether the engine they supply is brand new or old, or even whether they supply the engine at all. The picture they show is of an ES9J4 (and is not in a 406), but they don't specifically state which V6 it is the conversion package is intended to go to. If they were to provide a used engine, I'd want to know exactly where it came from, and that £6k+ price tag had better include brand new cambelt, tensioner kit, water pump, aux belt pulley, aux belt, head gaskets, rocker cover gaskets, freshly-re-sealed sump, and new oil.

You may be able to replace the stock ES9J4 head with the VVT head from the ES9J4S and receive a power increase without having to take quite so much stuff across, but I can't confirm that. I think this is one of the mods Paivto did on his monster 750HP+ twin-turbo mid-engined V6 Coupe build. If anyone knows how to mod a V6 engine it's that guy. There's a thread about it on the Coupe Club forums, under the "406 Coupe Projects" section, titled "over 500 hp", and is well worth a read.

I agree - Paivto is the man to ask.

I believe he says to put the later head on the earlier engine, and with a new cam you should get 300BHP... which is a must for a 4 door saloon sleeper.

The V6 should feel considerably quicker than a 2.1. Try pulling the hose from the bottom of the air filter housing (lift housing up then pop the pipe out). The fabric pipe which goes to the wheelarch can get pretty much destroyed and severely limit the ability of the engine to breathe

Also check all 4 wheels can turn freely, check all 6 spark plug wells for oil fouling (you'll need a new inlet manifold gasket) and check the coil pack and HT leads to the rear bank for damage. Won't hurt to get a new throttle body gasket, and take the throttle body off to give it a good clean - mine were manky as hell!

You'd be surprised how well a 2.1TD pulls!

But after driving diesels, you need to change your driving style. Most of the torque in petrol engines is at the top of the rev range, unlike in diesels where it's near the bottom... Explains why diesels run out of puff before long and petroleum don't seem to want to stop!

Agreed CJ: it can feel slower because you don't get the sudden arrival of torque.

You can drive the V6 like a diesel because there's so much torque at low revs -- more than my HDi 90.

I'm told the V6 wakes up at about 3000rpm.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

well I think this v6 hates me having more problems
Friday night 5pm in the inside lane of a dual carriageway the car in the outside lane decided that it was going to move into the inside lane without looking, result one drivers door dent with white paint on it there car the wing is all bent in on a nerwish vw.get out in the woman starts jappering to me in polish!!!.after 10 mins of not getting anywhere decide to walk away and off she drives.then Saturday the fan moter starts making a row so drop it out get a spare of my spare car[same year] come to put it in and the wireing is different!!.the 2 small wires one red one black plug into the moter on my new one and on my old one they are solded in and also have another plug that goes into the loom.couldnt be bothered to mess about as it was cold and wet so just plugged it all in to see what happens.well it works but only on max speed so I can live with that.then today the passenger window will only go down half way!
ah the joys of a 406
