opinions on 407's
I am thinking about changing my car, I would really like a 406 2.2 se
But I am also considering a 407 2.0 hdi 136 lux with 6 speed, I have found what looks to be a good one
Exception condition, low mileage & good price.
What I'm wandering is, are they as badly put together as you hear & are they a load more trouble than the 406
Any information will be greatfully received, thanks all DDD.

Re: opinions on 407's
As my main concern is cost and simplicity for repair I will stick with the 406 2.0. Hdi. The 2.2 engines are nothing like as good on fuel as the 2.0. and the 407 is a more complicated car than the 406. Having said that there don't seem to be a lot of complaints about the reliability of the 2.2. engine, certainly when compared with the 1.6. My first C5 was a 2.2 and it drove very nicely and I only got rid of it because of the fuel consumption.
Might be an idea to look at 'Honest John's ' reviews and other forums to get more of an idea.

Re: opinions on 407's
Firstly ignore anything Honest john or Top Gear say about the 407 they dont like it.
I'm on my 3rd 407 as they keep getting written off so i just replace with what i know and apart from a few issues the last 9 years have been mostly troublefree.
what year is the one youve seen as some issues are more relevant to the year Ie Fading Mfd are earlier models as are balljoints. (Both easy fixes)

Re: opinions on 407's
Peter, I'm after a bit more power as I do quite a bit of towing fully laden
Parkers say it's alright, not as dynamic as others (not bothered ) & ugly (I can't afford to be fussy )
with some electrical gremlins (now my ears prick up ).
& this is why I asked on here, as I know quite a few old 406 owners now have 407's
Trem,
Thanks for the reply the car I have seen is a 06, 58k, 1 owner 2.0 16v 136 hdi, lux with F.S.H

Re: opinions on 407's
06 is on the changeover typically, easist way to know if its the later one is the front grill,if it has chrome strips its the later one and Mfd and ballpoint should be the updated ones, I towed with my first 2.0 hdi and it was a doddle even fully laden down to Cornwall. Electrics seem less problematic than 406's. Dmf can be an issue but not as common as people worry about, again dog is another common worry but at 58k you should be okay for about another 50k,if not it's easy to fill and reset. Is the one you looking at a saloon or sw ?

The 407 2.0 is brilliant for towing...superb power and excellent gearing....I have customers who tow with theirs and they love the extra power over the 406 they had before.
Electrical gremlins I had on mine in 6 years and 60,000 plus miles were just related to warnings for right hand brake light and sidelight which were false...cured by taking the earth wire off and cleaning the contacts...also an ABS sensor fault which kept coming back in wet weather...ignored as it was just mildly irritating.
One customer had me remove his tyre pressure warning ecu as the warning kept coming up falsely....easy job to remove and set in PP2000.
I had ball joint failures...4 in 60,000 plus miles ...easy fix.
I had 2 drop link failures...easy fix.
I had a DMF failure at 44,000 miles.
We would have bought another but settled on the 508 which is a superb motor!!

If you can find one, a Zenith or X-line model doesn't have a troublesome particle filter fitted.

Make sure the rear wiper works as the have a tendency to seize, and check the glass opens on the microswitch not just the fob.

Re: opinions on 407's
I've just been off googling the images for 407's.
Just to remind myself.
If I make it to 90 years old,
I'd still be too young to own a 407.

Whatever you decide I still think that Peugeot/Citroen make the best diesel engines - apart possibly from the 1.6 so you should be OK there.
