All diesel-powered 406s are turbocharged - including the XUD engines (mechanical fuel pump) found in pre-1999 cars, and the HDi engines (modern common-rail high-pressure fuel system) found in cars from 1999 onwards.BigDaz wrote:As am new to pugs this might be a daft question but does the 03 plate hdi 90 have a turbo

Most of the petrol engines were naturally aspirated (no turbo) - except for an 8v 2.0 that was found in early 406 models.

Yes the 90 bhp engine doesn't need an intercooler but if you're not bothered about the power it's the far simpler car for lots of reasons. If you learn to ride the torque and feather the throttle at the right time you'll be making quite reasonable progress with a 90.

Strange as it may seem, intercoolers aren't an essential bit of kit, unless you plan to go rallying or summit. The rest of the time they're just something else to go wrong...BigDaz wrote:A turbo with no intercooler ?

Re: HDI (90) turbo or non turbo
One fixed geometry turbo with mechanical waste gate to limit pressure.
The 90 is slow but quite capable. Mine cruised happily at 85 and returned 75mpg on a run -- but not at the same time. Solid flywheel is another advantage.
The 110 has an intercooler and the turbo waste gate is controlled by the ecu. This is probably the sensible choice.
In both cases you get a massive and very satisfying kick of torque at 1800rpm and it's out of puff at 3000.
The 2.2 has a variable geometry turbo which delivers power much more smoothly and over a larger range. However, the 2.2 has various 'features' and should be avoided unless you understand what you're getting yourself into.
(The 2.0 136 in the 407 is effectively a hybrid of the latter two with the VNT and DPF but with the teething troubles fixed.)
