Ever wish you were no good at things?

Post by Welly »

I can do most things reasonably well around the home; I can diagnose and repair things and am competent at plumbing, electrics, decorating and carpentry (although wood is my least favourite) I also have a reasonable knowledge of cars, how they work, what to look for when buying and how to deal with Garage's.

This should be a good thing?

No!

In the last two weeks I've somehow been roped into this:
  • Jet-wash and paint Decking at Mums house
Re-decorate a Bedroom at Mum's (urgently due to impending guests)
Assemble a flat-pack Double Bed 100 miles away. 100 miles!
Decommission/modify a large external electrical junction box of many wires/bodges for Garden water feature/pumping station - 100 miles away
    Source a small car
Supply and install a house alarm battery pack for a Neighbour I met only 3 days ago :?
Move Welly_Junior out of Student home with a metric shitload of stuff
Carry out repairs to Student home to recover security deposit
And the Construction industry is weird and our competitors our playing silly games/tactics to steal contracts from under my nose. Lost 3 recently and now running out of work/choice and the labour force is getting twitchy all looking at me to win MORE work ASAP so I'm doing 12hr days and can't have any time off.

I want to curl up in a corner, wake me up in October please :(

You have to keep a sense of proportion. While you may not realise it, these are the "good old days".
If you don't think I'm right, ask yourself two questions:
1). Can you remember a time when you didn't think you were getting busier / taking on more / managing to cram in more than previously?
2). Do you honestly believe you will have an easier time once the present craziness passes?

See - you've never had it so good. 8)

Seriously though, I know the feeling - I too can do almost anything, I just can't do everything.

Keep your chin up and try to think which of those things would still somehow get done if you didn't do them yourself.

Sadly I am not good at any of those things.

Fortunately I am good at pushing buttons and that nearly pays enough to get a grown-up to do that kind of thing.

Unfortunately I often find that it's quicker to do something myself than it is to explain to someone else what's needed, how to do it, and answer the inevitable questions.

Cheers all, it's weird really I guess I'd be moaning if I wasn't able to do these things if I became ill or something and I suppose it's only a few days out of my life and what would I do if there wasn't any chores needed? sit around relaxing? I relax when I go to bed at night.

I dunno I think it's just with work being busy everything else is an added headache at the moment.

Git on yer bike and work on your immortality?

I seldom get any calls for help from my family here :supafrisk: I have been known to help out here but, since I did my back, I've not been asked much and anyway, it's so cheap to call in an expert* why would they?

At home, I'm supposed to be sort of retired but I have plenty to keep me occupied all day, every day, for, erm, ever :(

Call the AA/RAC/Green Flag - get them to sort it out. Then put your feet up.

She did call the breakdown service...........they said "you need a new battery". Got the car going and f*cked off.

I got one delivered to work and she brought the car up to me, it only* took about 30 mins to sort out. The original Motorcraft battery on it was date stamped 2004

That's had a good innings then!

I was under the impression that the breakdown services carried a few new batteries and would actually sell you one if yours was stuffed.

When mine died, I was fortunate enough to have use of the lad's Focus to nip up to Halfords and buy a new one (I certainly wouldn't have liked to carry it home).

But it's your ma, would you want her to get ripped off by some spotty yoof in Halford?

I'm still imagining a double bed sitting in the middle of a field somewhere...

enniwai, I think the word you need to use more often is "no". Neighbour with the alarm? Supply battery for him to fit. He's totally incapable? You'll get to it when you can. Water feature? "This is a death trap, buy a new one."

Yeah services like RAC carry batteries I think. I guess there's so many variants you'd need a massive trailer full of batteries with your van the whole time so it's a very limited supply at best.

'He' died about 6 weeks ago so I'm helping his 70 year old wife with this battery; she likes to set the alarm at night time now she's on her own. Very sad so I don't mind helping. Having said that I have literally only just met her, she's lived 6-doors away for the last 10 years.

The warty feature is coming to our our but needs disconnecting from what can only be described as a weather proof* box* of many bodges and many connector blocks and lash-ups when I had a brief look about a month ago. And it's buried in some bushes for extra fun.

The blessing/curse of being practical.
The most difficult thing to do is say "no" when people are taking the piss.
