New VED rates for 2017

Post by Welly »

Anyone seen these new rates? it only affects new cars purchased after April 2017 but there's some eye-watering rates for Road Tax:

Top of the rates being a new car that emits over 255 g/CO2/km AND cost over £40K the owner will be looking at a rate of : £2,000.00 per year PLUS a £310.00 surcharge for having a fancy car! seriously the Gubbermint are saying if you can afford a £40K car it's only fair that you contribute some more towards the big pot.

Also low emission cars that currently attract a rate of £30.00/yr will now be a flat rate of £140.00 (a rise of 365%).

That's only the first year rate, so £2310 in the first year, £450 for years 2, 3, 4, 5, then £140 pa after that.

So this only really impacts those buying new or nearly new cars, someone buying a 255+g/km car that is 5 years old under the new system, will be paying less than half of what I pay on the V6 (218g/km)!

Compared to the current VED bands, 5.5 years is the breakeven point for the 255+g/km band. I.e., after 5.5 years, you'll be better off on the new system (assuming <£40k)!

As someone who's never likely to own anything as new as 5.5 years, I'm not fussed.

The 'gubbermint' of whatever colour taxes whatever we whinge about least

(Me, I'd like to see an optional extra 2k/year road tax that allows you to use fog lights).
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Indeed, the new system is cheaper for people who buy "out-of-new-car-VED" cars in band F or higher, since you'll pay a flat £140pa instead of the sliding scale.

'Out-of-new-car-VED' is 1 year old or older for under £40k new price, 6 years or older for >£40k.

No, not you, the actual VED stuff: I left the UK just as all this nonsense was starting and I've never been curious/bored/brain damaged enough to want to understand it.
