Varnishing Point

Post by Doggy »

A little while back, Mrs Doggy announced she would like a laminate floor in the lounge. Being stupid enough to point out that since it's a wooden floor anyway, we'd be better off ditching the carpets and enjoying it 'au naturelle' as it were.
Which is why I find myself sentenced to picking up floor & edging sanders this afternoon, with a weekend of fun* in prospect.

Anybody able to recommend a suitable varnish for an 80-year-old pine floor, that's readily available over the weekend and doesn't need loadsa coatz?

Dust ahoy!

Yacht Varnish is good if you want long-lasting but doesn't have a colour of its own. I Yacht Varnished a 4mtr pine worktop in the Garage years ago (about 7 coats) and it's still fine in the damp atmosphere and all.

Dust, dust and more dust - enough to half fill a wheelie bin from a 15' square floor, (about 22 m2 for our younger readers).

Anyway, I wimped out of varnishing it due to man flu, so lots to look forward to next weekend.

If I may be so bold; have a little nose around the Skirtings where they meet* the floor - gaps can create drafts that now sans-carpet could be very cold. A bead of something mastic'y before Varnishing might be in order?

Also that floor needs to be super-clean otherwise you'll pick up bits in the varnish, can only really suggest a super-vacuuming and a wipe over with barely-damp microfibre cloth kinda thing. Must be DRY before the varnish obvs.

My son who seems to know about these things recommends Dulux water based as being very durable.

Thanks both.

I haz no skirtings at the moment, (the better for to skim the walls / sand the floor) and yes, there are sizable gaps where the skirting will go and in few other places. I'm kinda depending on the woodburner / free fuel to overcome what mastic can't.
