The automatic D5 seems thirstier on paper than the manual, the manaul, on the other hand, seems to be about the same as what the 607 does.

Yes. Same with brand new Black Man's Wheels with a 1.6l petrol enjun.

I've noticed a lot of 4 cylinder mercs about over the last few months.

I (like to) think it's finance wankers who are desperate for the badge and can't afford to buy let alone run a proper one.

I did make an A200 very angry when I left it at the lights. I stopped when I reached 70 and a few seconds later it came belting past.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.
