Mondeo 2.0/2,2 tdci

Post by grasmere59 »

After many years of stirling service form the 406 Exec estate and at 160k miles i fancy a change (wash my mouth out),i am tempted by the MK4 2.0/2.2 Titanium sport estates, has anyone had any experience with the 2.0/2.2 Mondeo's,i'll keep my head down from the incoming flack!

I personally think they are good looking motors, and if I had a bigger budget I would have got one instead of the 406 - which I was happy with in the end anyway..
I think the engines are the same block as the PSA cars, just different fuel systems.
My friend has a 2008 2.2 diesel Mondeo and it's been very reliable.

Trouble is there's nothing wrong with the 406 except the A/C has packed up and a rear door won't open,i just fancy a change but out of the frying pan into the fire springs to mind.My 406 has the same trim colour as your old one.

Yes, I remember your interior being the same - one of only a handful I have seen with it :cheesy:
If I remember rightly your 406 is a nice well maintained example, you would be hard pushed to find a Mondeo that has had the same level of care.
Did you ever get the rear lock mechanism and engine fan sorted?

The MK4 Mondeo is a fantastic car.

The only real common issue with the 2.0 and 2.2 which are PSA DW engines is the two pipes that go between the DPF and pressure switches split. This usually doesn't show itself until there's an issue with regenerating the DPF. The pipes can be replaced with some cheap diesel fuel hose.

Only thing to bare in mind is they are much bigger and much heavier than the 406. Don't expect more than 50mpg on a run and 40mpg everywhere else.

I did at one time consider the Jaguar version, I liked the interior but the engines, although PSA based don't seem to be as reliable as the Peugeot ones. I have never had an injector fail on a 406 2.0. Hdi but they seem to be a common problem of the Fords, they also need programming in if one is changed, again not necessary on the Hdi, they auto adjust. That was enough to put me off I'm afraid.

The MK3 Mondeo which is the same floorplan as the X-Type doesn't use PSA engines. The MK3 Mondeo uses the Ford Puma diesel engine which is the 2.0, 2.2 and 2.4 range of engines as fitted to the Transit. The Denso fuel system is the weak point, the engines are bullet proof.

I have a '58 Mondeo with the 2 litre diesel lump, it's a cracking car :)
As mentioned by Bailes, the DPF hoses split, this has happened on mine but I'm without trolley jack at the moment!

Still very undecided, the 406 is sitting on the drive giving me no problems and although it's been stood there for nearly 2 weeks i know it will start first time tomorrow and take me up to Derbyshire for the weekend,i just fancy a change for change sake but i could be shooting myself in the foot.I've got my eye on a 2.2.Titanium X Sport estate with 105k on the clock but no cambelt change yet and still on the original DMF. :?

Went to look at the 2.2 Titanium X Sport estate today, bit disappointed to be honest.2010 on a 10 plate wit 104k on the clock, the seller neglected to tell me that the EML had been on for the past 15 months (but not in limp mode) also that a transit van had sideswiped the n/s rear wheel arch and scratched and slightly dented it.The rest of the body had a few scuffs and marks and someone had tried to get tree sap off with what looks like a brillo pad in places. Both front wheels curbed all the way round. The worst thing was it was very lumpy at tickover,it could be felt throughout the cabin,if it were a petrol i would say it was on 3 1/2 cylinders on tickover, seem to go o.k. when on the move. With the new mot regs i think i could be in for a whole world of hurt with that EML on so had to walk away. :(

i got back in the 406 and started it up and it ticked over like a swiss watch,i think perhaps i just need to be happy with my lot and stop looking at buying bags of trouble.I might get the A/C fixed on the old girl and get some other alloy wheels that have a centre hole so i can get them balanced properly instead of those hoggars.

I personally really like the Hoggars - I've had no issues in balancing them, luckily there is an excellent tyre place (Tyreland) at the end of my road.

If I still had my 406 I would have gone for a set of Lincancubars from a 308 - they look ace on the 406.

i do like the look of the Hoggars but i've tried 2 different tyre companies near me and neither have managed to balance them successfully and they always seem to wobble about 70 mph which ruins the ride of the car.I might look for a set of Nimrods for it. Would this style fit a 406 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PEUGEOT-307- ... SwVvRbBSrp
