After a break of many years I went looking for a large Ford estate: mondeo with the biggest engine I could get.
The bloke round the corner was selling his 03 406 LX 2.0 110 HDI Estate. Never looked back. Had it a year, 4000 miles 50 to the gallon on a run. Boooom!

I've looked at 2 Mondeo estates now and am a bit disillusioned to be honest,one was a 2.2 tdci and the other 2.0 tdci,both top of the range but although both a lot newer than my 406 they were very rusty underneath not structural but don't think it will be long before it is,got back in the pug and drove home thinking why am i bothering as my pug has more standard extras than either of them and just seems to keep going and has less electronics to go wrong,i think i'm just going to be happy with the pug and run it until it drops.

I'd never go near an older Ford of any description. They are just not quality built cars, the old nickname..'Dagenham dustbin' sums them up, for me.
They don't survive the miles. My rolling project car, MX5 MK1, was succeeded by the MK2, at which point Ford took a heavy shareholding in Mazda, and basically took management control. Their bean counters moved in, and costed down every which way they could. They did a cheap and cheerful modification to the front chassis rails, with the result that a beautiful on the outside Mk2 can be completely riddled with rust, out of sight, and terminal. That model is likely to be the rarest of MX5 survivors .

Having owned 3 older Fords, before I learned my lesson, I always enjoyed driving them, and the layout inside was always driver friendly, I'd feel at home very quickly.

But, they're throwaway cars.

My pug just clicked over 160k and the leather trim is still in excellent condition,even the drivers seat has very minimal wear on the bolsters etc which can be more that said at the Mondeo's i have looked at with lesser miles,i'm not saying the Mondeo is a bad car just the ones i have looked at don't cut the mustard.The one and only thing that doesn't work on the pug is the A/C which is down to a corroded condenser but the electric sunroof still works so i can cope with that.

Funnily enough, the leather seats in my old 406 had covered over 200k miles with only minor grazing to the drivers bolster thanks to me leaving stuff in my back pocket....
The first 160k was as a taxi, but the back seats were as good as new on top, rusted to bits underneath...

Back seats not rusted hardly at all Kelv,people are still amused that an old Peugeot 406 can have electric memory seats and that they even still work!

Mine was probably rusty from constantly washing away drunk people's vomit.....
I swapped the rusty bases with nice clean ones at work once - in my lunch break, so not too tricky...

Mustard mit the ONLY things that have gone wrong with my Volvo are the FoMoCo parts, it's a constant bug bear, mainly the suspension, they must've squeezed the supply chain HARD to continue to supply quality* parts in great numbers to them. The other thing they're famous for on the V50/S40's was reducing the 'thickness' of the aluminium on the a/c condensers on a car with an 'open' front grille design.....it only takes a few good hits with stone chips and the condenser will tear/split and lose the refrigerant Volvo's traditional condensers of old would last 15 years or more, but hey who wants anything that lasts

I remember in 2011-ish I kept seeing new Focus's (Foci?) with only one rear number plate lamp, it was positioned centrally and just about bathed the rear plate in enough light. TBF if that saved Ford £1.00 per car then given the volume it's a worthwhile saving to pay for something else in the pipeline I guess.

Not sure if they kept that idea up or were shamed into going back to 'twin' NP lights like everyone else, must check that, sh*t how sad am I eh?

Overall this is all just more evidence of the 'appliance' mentality of producing new Eurobox shite.

Well i've gone and done it,put a deposit down on 2011 Mondeo 2.2 Titanium X Sport estate with 60k on the clock rightly or wrongly.
I felt like i was cheating on the 406 as it did the 300 mile round trip to go and look at the Mondeo ,can't bear to part with the 406 so trying to get multicar insurance quotes to try and keep it as a second car!

As per forum rules you are not allowed to buy a Ford after your 406 ownership, it must be a Volvo, you will have 14 days to correct your mistake before your continued membership goes to committee.
