My T4 is due an MOT six weeks ago :oops: and it smokes like a bugger....
I'm kind of looking for ways around the emission requirement as there is no way it's as clean as it was when it left the factory.
I may accidentally leave some tape over the sticker in the engine bay, if indeed there is one there :supafrisk:

I think the sticker was only required from 2008 model year,
If it passed last year and the tester can navigate the smog you'll be fine.

I took my estate in yesterday, normally it goes straight through, not this time, my friendly MOT man said, looking at the o/s sill
'I can see a hole' 'so can I', I said, by the time he had finished prodding it half the sill was laying on the floor, quite a shock, apart from the front edge of the bonnet I have never seen rust in a 406 before. He quoted me about £200 to make a plate and fit it.

Until recently I would have scrapped it and bought another one. I was following one one ebay that needed a lot of work and was only on £220 and had arranged to go and look at it on Saturday but it's now on £360 and I suspect it will go higher so I think that's out.

It also needed a rear suspension tie bar, I think I have one of those in stock, and both drive shaft boots. I looked in my trusty parts cupboard and found a pair of new XM boots, crossed referenced them and they appear to be the same as the 406. 8)

So I think I will be phoning him on Monday to do the welding.

Good decision.

I am in the mindset that if I know that my car is OK or will be OK for a while to come after work xyz is done, then I am keeping it. New* cars have far too many unknowns and will probably cost you more than you paid for the car in the first place. Especially older cars, like 406s.

My 407 is 11 years old now with only* 94k on the clock with almost nothing* wrong with it. OK, I need to replace one of the number plate bulbs but needs must :supafrisk: It had a new clutch, flywheel, cambelt and brakes/discs last year, so I don't want to buy another one that might need the same thing doing at ££££ cost.

I got my son's 2004 Passat 1.9 diesel...189,000 miles... through the test yesterday...it failed on both sides top suspension arms (common VW/Audi fault), brake light o/s, holes in both front wings (sharp edges)...changed both front shockers and springs as they have to come off to do the suspension arms.

My Estate went straight through the MOT today with just a couple of advisories :D ,i was chatting to the tester and i said to him that i believe if the car had failed then it would then be illegal to drive it from then on although it still had 2 weeks of the original MOT to run,he said that is a common misconception and even if it failed today it still could be driven untill the original MOT ran out.He said many people get confused over the new MOT rules. :?

Not sure that would work for my T4, as the MOT ran out 21st September...
It's booked in for Thursday, so I'll have all my appendages crossed that day - it took me nearly 20mins to start the bloody thing earlier ( I must invest in a trickle charger.... )

I was going to part with it since i got the Mondeo but i keep finding excuses to keep it and now it's got a years ticket on it there's another excuse :)

I work next door to an MOT station so obviously that makes me a qualified vehicle examiner so listen to me:

If your car fails an MOT on or after the expiry date you can only drive it away to be directly repaired, or to a pre-booked MOT test later on.

If your car fails an MOT and there's still some time left until the original MOT runs out then you may drive the car normally until the expiry date but ONLY IF it didn't fail on something the MOT tester considered 'dangerous' if this was the case you would invalidate your Insurance and, if caught, face a hefty fine and points for driving an unroadworthy vehicle.

It is my understanding that even with the old MOT rules if the car was deemed "dangerous" by the MOT tester it would have got an off the road notice and could not legally be driven no matter how much of the old MOT was left, I should have said in my original post that if the car fails on a non "dangerous" fault it could still be driven until the existing ticket ran out. He said that a lot of people were under the impression that even if it fails on a minor defect they could no longer drive it legally, that it is what I thought until he showed me the exert from the DOT MOT regs.

Most of it's quite fair really, however now if you fail on low tread depth, you're not allowed to drive it to a tyre place.

Still amazes me that people would send a car for an MOT knowing the tyres are on the limit, or there's bulbs out etc.

This used to seriously wind me up when a customer gives you their car to get through the test and you find that:
There is no fuel in the car.
The tyres are bald...how the heck can I put my life and licence on the line taking it for test?
Bulbs are out.
The customer tells you there's been an advisory since last year that really needs fixing before the test but I'm expected to take it for test with a certain fail!
The car fails then they say "what am I going to do now?"

Thankfully I don't have to worry about such things now!
