New car suggestions

Post by Captain Jack »

So, after an addition to our family, times two, it's time to replace the car. No, not the 407 - my wife's Swift. With two babies and a twin pram thing in the boot, there's literally no space for anything else (shopping etc.). Even the 407 is a tad on the small side and I have to push my seat forward for the baby car seats to fit in the back.

My wife loves RAV4 type cars - nice and high and certainly has more space than her Suzuki. I don't like it - boring cars... And diesel engines are horrible (and I am sure wiggy has more of an opinion on those). So I've been considering my options.

Ideally, it would still need to be an SUV type vehicle with easy access and plenty of space. At the top of my list is the CX5, preferably with the 2.2 diesel engine 2017 model. Might be a smidge out of our price range though being so new but I hear older ones has a lot of problems.

Another option is something like a CRV but had bad experience with the Accord 10 years ago and it's putting me off.

What are Korean offerings like these days? Not a fan of those badges but maybe they are decent now? I sat in a 18 plate Santa Fe recently while my friend had it as her courtesy car and while it looked nice, it felt plasticky and something that might not potentially last long. But then Peugeots do OK....

What are 3008s like? Some familiarity and they look alright. Hopefully work with Diagbox as well...

Thoughts?

Hahahahahaha  Maybe with a trailer...

I've no idea really, modern cars all seem to be a disaster waiting to happen. It really depends what sort of age you're looking at. People seem to favour oldish big Mercs. on here (would rather drown in raw sewage myself). Apparently the Koreans have their dodo together these days, must be worth a gander.

My work colleague has a diesel-powered Santa Fe. It gets worse MPG under all driving conditions (urban or cross-country) than my petrol-powered BMW 525i. But it is apparently a really nice car to drive.

IIRC Sam had a Dacia and liked it. (I have no idea what size they are.)

A former colleague wanted a 4x4y thing and and he was very sensible and got himself a Kia or something like that.
But when he found out he liked it he ditched it for a V8 rangerover.

Congratulations on your recent arrivals.
My daughter has twin 4 year-olds and a 6 year-old. They manage, (just) with a 307 hatchback + roofbox for holidays. They've had that car since the eldest was born, so it's managed all the various baby seat/carrycot/pushchair combos + dog so it's surprising what you can cram into a relatively small but versatile space.
I looked at the 4007 / Citroen C-Crosser which is a Mitsibushi Outlander in disguise. Diesel Mitsi's have planet destroying VW mechanicals, whereas the others have the wonderful DW12 in single turbo spec giving 160 bhp and decent economy. Not sure if they're genuinely roomy enough though.
The later shape 3008 is nothing like as hideous as it's predecessor, but only the really underpowered versions offer a manual box.
Sorry, don't know anything 'bout the rest.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Hope your daughter found it easier with twins than us. Pure hell.... And no sleep. Not to mention a massive leak in my wallet.

All these SUV thingies are certainly fetching a premium. Anything remotely recent (2015+) are up in 15k range! Heck, I might as well buy a Range Rover Evoque thing or a nice E class estate.

I do like the GT Line 3008 but most are indeed sub 2L engines. What are turbo petrols like? Never driven one but again it seems to be a case of a mouse trying to pull a train.

Those are basically Renners, I think. Not sure I want one - again seems like a thing that will fall apart quickly.

When I went to the south of France for work a couple years back, my hire car was a Peugeot 2008, which had a 1.2 litre 3 cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, outputting 110 HP. It was actually a lot of fun to drive, not too dissimilar to my son's old 1.6 petrol Focus. They are also available in 130 HP petrol versions, and 100 HP and 120 HP HDi versions. Really not a bad car at all. Take one for a test drive and see what you think.

I don't really think so - my wife used to stay overnight with them 2 or 3 times a week so both parents could a get a night's sleep. IIRC that went on for about 6 months or so.
The twins start school in September which will make their parents lives a lot easier, (at least in term time).

Well done Cap'n and congrats. All the 'no sleep' nonsense won't last long :)

We brought up our 2 and 4 year olds (one foldy push chair) in a Citroen AX

The fashion now is larger cars, I get this, and many parents go down that route; perhaps because 'everyone else has one'. In my personal experience you need a bigger motor as the occupants get bigger; me, the wife and 2 x 20-somethings need space on long journeys - my Volvo is cramped and so is the C4.

I would go for a Kia Sportage with the 1.7 diesel engine. Balls to people who say Diesels are 'out'....nothing will happen there for years. Eventually these big motors will be powered by small Pez turbo's plus electric assistance but for now the choice is limited and costs are high for some reason.

Hrm... seems like 1.6L HDI hauling the 508 barge all over again.

Better late than never...

I'd recommend a Duster any day of the week with young kids.

They may look and feel cheap but they are designed to be rugged. They're cars that were originally designed to be sold in Easten Europe, India, Russia etc. Tough, simple and reliable vehicles.

Our Duster was great. It's based on the Nissan B platform. The same platform that the Nissan Joke, NV200 Van, Cube, Renault Captur, Clio etc are all based on.

The 1.5DCi we had was the same engine that has been used for the last 20 years by Renault and Nissan and even Mercedes use it in their 'A/B/C 180d' models.

Ours held onto it's value really well too. We bought it 1 year old with a few thousand miles on the clock for £10,500. We sold it 2 years later with closer to 20k on the clock for £8,650.

We replaced it with a Sandero 0.9TCe which went back last week for a full refund after 5 months and 3,500miles. It had an issue where it would destroy spark plugs if you swapped between 95ron and 97-99ron petrol which cased a horrific juddering and an unpredictable throttle. They had it back 4 times and wanted me to drop it in a 5th time so they could carry on replacing random parts trying to fix an obvious software/failed knock sensor issue.

My Wife is insisting on driving around in my 16 year old ST220. I give it 3 months before she's sick of feeding it's 3.0 V6 petrol and wants to purchase another car.

I did look at Renners briefly and I am scared of them falling apart. Can't be worse than a Peugeot though!

Thanks for this - will take a closer look.

I've come to the conclusion that these days you cannot buy a bad car. You get a car with faults, and all manufacturers make the occasional Friday afternoon car. But, as a general rule, you cannot go out and buy a car that with care wouldn't do 200k.

To replace 1 of our 406 estates
I got a 2009 Mazda 6 Estate with a 2.2 MZR-CD 185HP Diesel, I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy, Nice car to drive but in the past 12 months its had

2 x timing chains, The first one I fitted at 160000 miles as the original was badly stretched, failed under parts warranty after 2000 miles, and I had to fit the second. Not a 2 minute job!!

DPF Failed
Heated seats failed
Rear discs and calipers badly corroded
Rust spots on roof and corrosion coming through in various places
Alternator clutch pulley failed taking out the drive belt, 800 miles from home
Heater flap servo motor failed
Bluetooth module failed
Alarm goes off randomly in warm weather
The list goes on and on
I am now waiting delivery of a front wheel bearing housing, the original has distorted and it drives like its got a buckled wheel.

I need a big estate but don't know what to replace it with.
I would love a new 406 90 hdi,
