Early 406

Post by FarmerPug »

Ive had a stint in the 406s two sucessors.

A 2015 508 SW in GT spec. Solid car, crap interior storage, a constant worry that the headlights will break and cost a 4 figure sum to fix, outdated infotaiment that liked to shut down if the heater was on, and an atrocious, truly dreadful ride quality.
Also too much worry that it was a new car that was going to get scraped, kerbed, and would depreciate. It stayed for 6 months. Replaced with a Berlingo Multispace which was fantastic until it got wrote off in December 2021.

As a stop gap for the Berlingo was A 2005 407 2.0 HDi Executive Automatic.
Hard seats, suprisingly harsh ride, a heavy cumbersome feeling on the road, terrible fuel economy (okay on a run, not great for the commute to work) and the feeling that every day would bring a new fault message.
A 2013 C4 1.6 HDi came up for sale in copart needing a headlight and bumper, its weird to say this but its a more comfortable car than the 407, quieter at motorway speeds, feels quicker and more fun also.

The 407 i planned to sell but a mate asked about it and then a swap occured, a 407 for a phase 1 1997 406 2.1 LX.

The 406 just feels like home, big soft inviting seats and a ride quality few modern cars seem able to provide.
This is the first time with a 2.1 TD and it seems like a nice old engine, no ball of fire but relaxing to potter along at sensible speeds.

Its a nice original car with about 111,000 miles on the clock. One of the most surprising aspects is that the air con still blows ice cold.

Does anyone have an original phase 1 radio that would suit one of these? There was a phase 1 in a breakers yard about an hour and a half from home, got some goodies on it but the radio was missing.

Nice to hear from you again.

That's a tidy example for a car that must be at least 25 years old. 8)

My bro and I had a 407 2.2 HDi SW GT & a C5 2.0 HDi VTR+, both were serious disappointments after the 406 era.
Liked the look of the 508 initially, thinking it was what the 407 should have been, but I went off them pretty quickly.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Hi Kieran, nice to see you are back in the fold - I couldn't find a worthy successor to my old 406, so I bought another 406 ( along with the Volvo hobby car )

I have a D8 stereo in my garage, with a USB player in place of the tape deck ( courtesy of Tony from Facebook R.IP :( ) It was from a Coupe but should be fine. There is a code with it too

You are welcome to it.

Hello young feller! *waives*

That's a nice looking early example, good interior too for a stripper. ISTR getting a nice shove in the back from 2.5k upwards in the 2.1td (better than the 2.0 HDi's here we go, any second now.. oh).

It's a shame about the later Pugs, a right disappointment. I was wondering what the latest 508's going to be like. Not that I'd fit in one, or want a car with so much fragile electronics... Still, now PSA encompasses Fiat Chrysler Jeep and all that (what's it called now, Clematis?) I suspect the trend is going to be ever downwards :(
