I'm an idiot

Post by Blue406 »

Well. its official. I'm an idiot.

Today I thought it might be a good idea to replace the drivers side windscreen wiper arm.
Well, it didn't want to come off. I was prising it with a spanner when the windscreen when "CRACK".

I had not noticed I was putting pressure on the edge of the screen.

BASTARD f*ck I screamed.

Broken hearted I gave up on the wiper arm and went inside to see what the damage would be to my wallet.
Luckily, my insurance has a Windscreen clause which only requires a £60 excess from me.

So, I'm getting a new screen fitted next wednesday for £60.
In a way, its a relief. With all the motorway miles my 6 has done, the current screen is littered with tiny little dinks and scratches from stones and stuff. Its OK, but for when the sun shines directly upon it. Then it highlights all the imperfections and drives me mad.
I had wanted a new screen but didn't have the guts to smash it and claim for a new one.

Dumb luck for the win.

Shall take photos of the removal process as I know you will all want to see the damage and the new screen.

Hate the feeling when you break something on your car. Especially when it's by doing something daft like that.

Worked out well though. Got to get mine done really it's had a small crack in it for about a year now.

Classic

It reminds me off the time when i was putting on a air intake pipe on my Fez Diesel, i was clipping it to the battery tray when i caught one of my pinkies in the clip it hurt that much i stood back and went to give the wheel a great kick but missed and booted the wing insted. End result bleeding fingure and dented wing, i was not a happy chappy

If it's any consolation I couldn't get my wiper arm off either. I gave up after something started creaking.

You new screen will be lush though. Try and get one with a sun strip too, they don't mind just ask the windscreen place. I have to do the vans at work and always get a tinted screen with sunstrip whether it's supposed to have it or not.

First off, I read the title and thought "AND???"

But I can say I almost did the same thing on my D8, but luckily, whilst levering, I though "hold on a minute, what am I levering against", and gave up. I ended up living with the old arms.

*snigger* :P

I've tried to get my wiper arm off before, because it's so stiff it can happily hold a wiper blade hovering just over the screen but not touching it, but I ran into the same problem you did. However instead of trying to force it I just gave up and broke out the WD40 for another severe dousing

What is it with 406 wiper arms? :/

Getting new glass was one of the first things I did to my 406 come to think of it. I had it a couple of months and then one morning the sun was out and low, and as I turned down one street I found the glass completely opaque when head-on to the sun. It really was that bad I had to reverse out of the street because I simply couldn't see forwards (and my glass is almost always perfectly clean)! I think Autoglass charged me something like £350 to replace it :/

Funnily enough. I used WD40 too. But it looks like I didn't give it enough time to work.
About an hour after I cracked the glass I went back to it, determined a piece of metal won't get the better of me. It came off so easy! BASTARD!

In another piece of news, I was crawling around a scrapyard yesterday. Came across a China Blue D8 that had an absolute mint engine bay with a V6!!! it looks brand new!

The 6 on top of it had wind deflectors on its driver and front passenger door. I had them off in no time! Proper Pug wind deflectors for a fiver! Superb
