Just How Strong Is A D8?

Post by ThePrisoner »

The reason why I ask is my mate and I have decided to enter to Scumball Rally, and need to find a vehicle that will get us and all our kit across Europe and back without any troubles aprox 2000 miles.
However the vehicle must cost £500 or less (Purchase price)
We have a shortlist of vehicles;

Peugeot 406 D8
Mitsubishi Shogun
Range Rover Classic

If we were to choose a 406 it would have to be a D8 for its reliability we know that much, but not knowing alot about D8's which model would be best for us to use?

Any particular engines? and what faults would we need to look out for. Body work is not an issue, just mechanically safe / MOT'able and reliable.

Any ideas?

I hate to say it but a £500 RRC is no where near reliable enough! Some blokes I know just did plymouth to banjul in a mk1 shogun didn't miss a beat apparently but not great for comfort (http://drewsweb.net/pdc04/pdc07/Default.htm - it's a poor man's Paris - Dakar). If you ain't needing to go off road I'd get a pug - can't beat it for comfort on a long trip. Diseasel is probably best, but what about Tyreburner's exec turbo for £450 8) viewtopic.php?t=2696. 'Twon't be embarresed on pace at they can be quite thrifty if you're nice to them

Dai I wanted to do the Plymouth to Banjul challenge last year and take my dad with me, he didn't want to go so that kind of scuppered my plans as I didn't have a mechanic I could use.

My mate has agreed todo the scumball with me now and plans are already afoot....

Maybe a nice SRi Turbo os similar would be an idea then, then it could set a decent pace also...

If you can get one, my old 2.1TD was an outstanding engine. Good performance, decent economy, reliable and had 172,000m on the clock when I p/x'd it for the coupe and was still as strong as a tank.

I'm not doing the Scumball but I am doing 2 others the Crumball Rally and Barcelona Rally. Both of which will involve driving about 3,000 miles.

I very much doubt a £500 406 will make it, I have a Sierra 2.0 DOHC which I might use for our Rallies, diffs on our rallies to yours is we can only use a car that is worth £200 or less. For £500 you could buy an absolute MINT Sierra 2.0 DOHC with 12mths MOT and Tax. That is what I would buy anyway. Its RWD so plenty of FUN, also if I remember the Scumball is going on the Nurburgring? If so you will have fun in a Sierra as it quite nippy. :cheesy:

The Range Rover will overheat and be not much chop upwards of 90mph...also pretty expensive on petrol!

What Shogun/Pajero were you thinking of getting - There are a few variants eg you can get a 4 and a 6 cyl?

As for a 500 quid 406, it would have to be the bargain of the century to get somthing which is half decent. That one for 450 on 406oc looks a pretty good buy though?

What about offerings from the Sweedish manafacturers such as Volvo and Saab - Turbocharged and I'd imagine for them to be pretty cheap over you way aka 850 and 900/9000?

Dont buy anything French, it will prob let u down. Keep to things like Fords where if you do break down a local garage will be able to fix it quite cheaply as spare parts are aplenty.
