Am I being ripped off? 406 GLX DT on ebay

Hi, I won the auction for a car - supposedly a 406 GLX DT. The auction link is here with pictures of the engine:

However I got emailed by another ebay member who said not to buy it because its got the wrong engine. The seller says its a normal diesel and not a turbo diesel and is the same engine that was used in later 405s and a small number of 406s. Doesn't 'DT' mean that it should be a turbo diesel?

My information is that that 406 was only available in HDi and Turbo diesel models and a few were normal diesel but they were 75 BHP and not 90 BHP as advertised here.

I would be enormously grateful if anyone could tell me what this car is. My fear is its an engine from another car..

it is definatly NOT a turbo diesel , it looks like the naturally aspirated engine out of either a 405 or 306 , the easy way to tell is that the turbo engine hasnt got that black plastic "manifold " on top of the engine just a thick pipe going over to the turbo . i think someone is trying to rip you off . tbh i dont think they ever made a non-turbo diesel 406 ( someone correct me if im wrong ) but as far as i know in the d8 it was either a 1.9 90bhp or a 2.1 110bhp , hope this helps

Thanks for that info. They have already admitted that its not a Turbo Diesel but insist that its a genuine 406 engine and they say the car model is genuinely 'GLX DT' - Does DT mean turbo diesel in Peugot speak? If so I can tell them that they have misdescribed it.

oh no you didnt, i was watching this car on ebay thinking some poor bugger is gonna buy it and end up fooked up, its got the DW8 diesel engine, which was neverdestined for the 406, it came from the 405, 306 and peugeot partner and expert vans
its a non-turbo unit which will be woefully slow in the 406, in the 306 it takes about 20 seconds to reach 60 i doubt it will even make that in a 406
refuse to pay as its not properly listed

yeah DT means diesel turbo , if it wasnt a turbo it would just be a GLXD not a GLX DT

i drove a 306 with a non-turbo diesel engine and that was slow , wouldnt like to think how slow it would be in a 406 estate

yep, the easy way to tell is by the chassis no.
mine starts
VF38BRFV....

the underlines RFV is my engine no.
it should be D9B, DHX something like that
if it says DW8 then its obviously fitted with that engine from the factory
but it shouldnt have been unless its been imported from iran or somewhere like that

Thanks, thats really great info and confirmed my suspicions!
I think something was trying to tell me not to bid on the car from the start because when I was entering the bid my mouse stopped working so I rebooted my PC and it refused to boot up (this never happens normally). Took me ages to get computer back up.

Pity though cos I really need a car with a tow bar for next weekend. What do you think of this one?
I don't mind loosing £555 quid so much if its a piece of scrap and if it lasts a year or 2 it'll pay for itself:

. Wheres a good place to buy a good used 406 diesel (preferable estate with tow bar) ?

buy one without a tow bar and then get one fitted as the clutch and gearbox will have taken a much less of a beating
i would recommend either the 2.1 td or 2.0 petrol turbo for towing
the 1.9 td struggles to move the estate as it is

That certainly is a strange estate.

The engine doesn't even look like it's supposed to be in there

You would expect there to be a few issues transplanting that thing in there with the ECU/immobiliser wouldn't you? enough problems for it not to be really worth doing in the first place.

Unless the original engine blew and the owner was skint and bought that wheezy thing to go in there. You would have thought that given the extra cost of making the thing work properly would outway the cost of finding a 'proper' (quite common) replacement Turbo unit which would have slotted straight in there.

Strange indeed.

If you want a decent cheap tower - then try and get a N/P/R/S reg 2.1 12 valve Turbo Diesel without a Tow-Bar and then fit one (as James said) My HDi was used for international caravaning (I found out later) and my clutch is all but ruined.

If your really lucky get a 605 2.1 dt

My turbo came with a towbar, but the only signs of wear on it are where it's been used as a rear-mounted battering ram and parking sensor *AHEM*! The clutch is fine though, tbh I think a 2.0 turbo with a towbar would probably only have been used for light towing if any - if you know you want something to yank a caravan along you'd be daft not to buy a diesel (unless you already know how torquey the turbo is...)

did they only start fitting the hdi into the series 2 d9? if that shed went for over a grand i wonder what mine would be worth d9 estate hdi 90 99t 96k miles

they put the HDi 110 in the D8.5
