someone hit my car

Post by darrenwall »

i was parked outside my girlfriends house today when the bloke living opposite reversed his escort van into the side of my 406 putting a large dent in the rear panel above the wheel . he admited liability straight away but his wife got quite lippy and said that she wanted to see my insurance documents as well . does anyone know if i have to give them my details when it was clearly his fault cos if she contacts my insurance company im afraid incase they put my price up next year ?

Normally by law you have to exchange details, but as you have'nt done anything dont bother.

But still ring your insurance company and tell them they will sort everthing for you

If he has admitted liability then your insurance should not go up as your insurance company will get all costs from his insurance company. I would ring your insurance company and tell them what happened. Also if you have a digital camera handy, take some pics.

Yup what they said. :arrowu:

You have to inform the insurance and you'll have to submit a report, and you'll have to declare it as a "not at fault" accident on all your quotes for the next 3-5 years.

Just be careful mate. Mrs Dai got reversed into last year, she was reversing out of our drive when she saw that another car was turning at the top of our street, she stopped to wait for the other car to get out of the way but the other driver didn't see her and reversed into her stationary car. Other driver admited liability straight away then changed her mind, the only witness suffered memory loss (she was another neighbour who obviously didn't want to get involved  ), the insurance said we had to settle 50/50 , apparently it would be counted as both cars reversing in the street and therefore 50/50, they then actually said that as the wife was exiting the drive into the street we might even lose if it went to court. We had paid £250 excess to get our car repaired, which we then didn't get back  . Wifey's insurance went up £100 (2 years NCB knock back). Mines just gonna go up about £40 - (I'm still trawling for quotes :? ).... So it's getting on for £400!

Real pisser is that I'd already costed the parts for the wife's car, and I reckon I could have got it repaired for a fair bit less than £400, the insurance claim was actually more like £1300  . I offered the "let's avoid the insurance" route but the other lot claimed their car, an old Astra, had a crumpled floor and would therefore be a write off, so we had to go through the insurance. Their car was repaired virtually overnight about a week later. Lying Twats! I still don't know why they insisted on going through insurance, I really wish we hadn't!

I've tried quotes with and without (for curiosity's sake) an acident I had last year (not my fault), and the insurance is the same. So as long as it all goes to plan and they admit full liability, your insurance shouldn't go up at all.

What's the damage like?

That's mental! No way that's that amount of damage. Although I suppose the insurance company would want the panel replaced, rather than a knock out and spray job. If they do write it off, buy it back for bladders and pop it back out yourself, then get it filled formed and painted for a couple of hundred!

Name and address is all you are lawfully obliged to supply to 'any party having reasonable cause to require them'.

Depends on how you want to play it, but the other option is to get a quote in a back street garage (cash payment) that you trust to do a good job, then take that to the bloke and ask him if he wants to pay it and not go through the insurance.

Be careful not to make his missus more suspicious though.

that wing is repairable, looks arround £600 to £800, depends if the insurance assesor likes the car or not, when my old 306 got written off, the assesor was like, such a shame to a nice car, and i got £2500 for it, but paid £1700 for it yet when my bmw convertible was written off, the assesor was really anti-bmw, and said, what a pile of crap, this doesnt work, that doesnt work, it was already in a state before the accident etc.. and i got £2300 for it, yet 2 years earlier my sister bought it for £4400

That shouldn't hold up the repair though TooT, your insurance company should get it fixed then persue the other lot for the losses. Or are you TPF&T? :|
