Replacment Car

Post by xplosiv »

HI,

As you know my 406 has been written off, so I need suggestions for a new car around 6 years old max and a diesel of some kind(as petrol is too expensive)
I am looking at some 406 HDi’s any other suggestions?

I need a large car as I go kayaking all the time.

Andy

You'd get a nice 6 coop for that.

Don't think you'll find a diesel coop for £3k though.

Anything except for French, unless you want a car with Electrical Issues.

Avoid vedubs - the 'reliability' is a myth brought about by clever marketing. Just look at JD power - the Passat being beaten by the rover 45 was kept quiet, as was the 75 beating every single Mercedes! The 2 Glof Gits i've owned were the worst pieces of sh1te its ever been my displeasure to own.

Other than the classic 406 "brake fluid low" warning on the OBC, i've never suffered an electrical fault (discounting the odd bulb needing replacing) in 5 Peugeots, and 1 Renault. Worst cars I ever owned for electrics were Astras (munchy munchy alty-nators!) - of 5 Astras (i'm an ex Astranut) 4 needs new alternators, 1 of them twice (suspected loom problems contributed to that, methinks).

The only totally faultless car I ever owned was my 7 series, but at £58k it could damn well afford to be righteous! Oh, and Vikkis 107 has yet to show a fault in 800 miles...

I certainly hope you didn't buy that 7 series new. Wouldn't be worth half that in 2 years...

HI,

I have had a look at two 406's today: -

One had 52K on the clock and was a shed. The air con was not functioning (compressor probably = Empty wallet here) and the under tray for the engine was not present, plus had a nasty knock in the front bumper.

The second had 75K on the clock and was a very well maintained company car, but I am not sure on the mileage though. And need peeps opinion on the following problems I may have spotted:-

When the engine was idling I could hear a kind of rotating scratching noise (could be the aux belt pulley which would cost a tonne) this may be a first for the forum, but then again maybe not. Please download the following wav of the noise (if you are sad enough) no really I could do with some help on this. The noise did go when n I moved the accelerator very slightly. ( if you listen you can hear a scratching noise in the background – have to listen passed the bass of the diesel)

http://www.andy166.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/1.wav - may change to zip as it auto plays and may get irritating

What do you think is leaking here (please see red circle on the following picture : -

Thanks for all your help it is greatly appreciated,

Best regards,

Andy

Yeah, but the ex missus was a director for a successful datacoms firm, so she could afford frivolities like that. Hope it was worth a tenner by the time I (relucantly) gave it up. Fancied a Boxster, but smashing my knee had me hankering for an auto and some legroom at the time.

that thing in the pick is the air dozer its a motorized flap that creates a depresson in the inlet manifold so that when EGR is used the gasses are actively sucked into the inlet manifold out of the exhuast, theres nothing wrong with that leaking oil as its the residue from the turbo inside the pipe being forced out of that area, as long as it pulls fine and there is no smoke dont worry about that, as for the noise, sounds just like a mullerd crank pulley if you ask me
