Anyone know about Audio Codec's?

Post by ThePrisoner »

I have absolutely no idea about what codecs are, what they do or how they work, and that is why I am here.

I am using Windows Media Player 9 and I am trying to play some .wav files.

I get an error saying;

'You’ve encountered an error message C00D10D1 while using Windows Media Player. The following information might help you troubleshoot the issue.

Codec is missing
Windows Media Player cannot play the file (or cannot play either the audio or video portion of the file) because the DataFusion Systems GSM610 (86) codec is not installed on your computer.

The missing codec might be available to download from the Internet. To search for the DataFusion Systems GSM610 (86) codec, go to the WMPlugins.com Web site.'

I have searched the entire internet and cannot find the correct codec for download anywhere!

Can anyone please help me I am depserate...

Just in case you need it;

Player: 9.00.00.3349

Thanks,
Pris.

Put simply it's something your computer uses to to encode/decode media files, ie to turn the data in the file you've downloaded into sound/video, or vice-versa.

As far as I can tell the codec you're missing is some commercial variant of an otherwise popular codec used on mobile phones. Best guess is you need some software from the mobile phone manufacturer to view the media. Try asking the person who sent you the file to send it you as mpeg or something? Or try uploading it to youtube ;)

Yep thats about it. A .wav file is a lossless audio format similar to .flac and is pretty much a default plugin on WMP. Either install WMP 10 or 11 or get the Winamp / VLC media players from here,

http://www.download.com/

Look at the left of the page under windows software and click on the audio video software linky and then browse all the different players and plugins and download and install what you need. There are tons to choose from and if you don't like it, just un-install it and try another - they're all free :cheesy: :cheesy:
