As some of you will know my interwebby skillz leave a lot to be desired but I have always wondered why web addresses have these differing endings and what they mean.
And today is the day I have chosen to find out from all you techy computor guys
(please make your replies as interesting as possible)

The idea was:
.com = commercial
.org = non-profit organisations
.net = network operators
However since the Internet gained popularity over the last 10 years or so, it's been a free-for-all :/
