Goodbye Everyone ...

Post by GeordieBoy »

... As from Midnite tonight I'm off on The Crumball Rally "The Italian Job". :P
Got a feeling I wont make it back and will prob crash on the mountains with our sh*t heap.

The Crumball Rally Co presents “The Italian Job”, a budget car rally
taking place over a long weekend in July 2007, and very loosely based
on the classic 1969 crime caper. Taking in France, Switzerland and Italy
in 3 days, we'll be visiting several of the key film settings including the
incredible St. Bernard pass and the city of Turin, before heading onto
Monte Carlo and Nice for the Finish.

But it’s not just about driving…….you will also need a sense of fun to
take part in the daily challenges en route, and be a bit of risk taker since
you and your team have to do all this in a car ideally costing no more
than £200.

Day 0 Thurs 00:00hrs: Drive to Dover for 10:40am Ferry to Boulogne 370 miles 6 hrs

Day 1 Fri: Boulogne to Besancon (Approximately 400 miles)
We will all meet in a large car park on the outskirts of Boulogne
at 9am where all the teams can admire / laugh / take bets on the
durability of each others vehicles! The first days route will take us
through the Champagne region, and on through the French
countryside to the ancient city of Besancon.

Day 2 Sat: Besancon to Turin (Approximately 250 miles)
Today we set out past scenic Lake Geneva and then on over stunning
mountain passes through the Alps, including the awesome Grand St
Bernard. Having completed the days challenges (and assuming you
still have sufficient clutch, brakes and nerves intact!) we then
head on towards Turin.

Day 3 Sun: Turin to Nice (Approximately 300 miles)
Starting with challenges based on the film in the centre of the city of
Turin, the route then heads to the coast and the opulence of Monte
Carlo, before finishing along the French Riviera in Nice!
For those who make it this far, where better for an awards ceremony
and party?!

Day 4 Mon: Relax by the Hotel Pool nursing a hangover

Day 5 Tues: Drive from Nice to somewhere near Boulogne 13 hour drive 870 miles

Day 6 Wed: Finish yesterdays driving to Boulogne and get Ferry to Dover, and drive back to Newcastle 370 miles 6 hrs

St Bernards Pass thru the Alps:

And we're doing it in this shitbox: A 1996 N reg 1.8 Turbo Diesel Ford Mondeo Saloon that cost £75 + £100 to get it to pass an MOT.
The Gearbox is making a worryingly dodgy sound and so are the Drive Shafts, just hope they last 3,000 miles.

We're expecting a full report with pics etc if you manage to make it back

Dissapointed you're not attempting in an early D8 diesel though :frown: :cheesy:

That does sound fun!

the vw polo (1.3cl 83 b reg)i got our lass to learn it would have been perfect for that, paid £50, manage to sell it on year later for £175. It did have full new exhuast thou. Some how it went stright through its mot too!

mondeo will be fine as long as the cam belt doesn't go and it doesn't over heat!

Good luck! (you'll need it with a Mundano ;) )
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Just noticed they've fitted Si bumbers to it and a fart can, not to mention the profeshunal spray job.

What was your budget for modifying this festering old mondy for the rally?
