MPG Crisis!

Post by mjb »

Dammit I get a new job which saves me about 115 miles a day of driving, and all's well and good until I notice my MPG figure... 16!

My days of ludicrous economy are over

At least I'll be filling up less than once a month now instead of every 4-5 days :D

5 mile round trip - that is a long commute. Mine round trip is only 3 miles. Not that great for the car but a good incentive to walk.

Oh man, if I had just a few miles a day to go I'd be on my bike at every opportunity! 8)

Actually that is the reason... Keele Uni is at the top of a lone, relentless and very nasty hill. My old Laguna actually failed to make it up there a couple of times... I tried it once a few years ago and there's no way you'll ever get me on a bike going up that hill again!

Well ok, you'd have to push it up the hill, but just think how quick your ride home would be! :cheesy:

Dude, you can't avoid hills when you're on a bike! I tried for years, always tried to plan the route to avoid the biggest hills (which is something of a challenge in Wales! ). Then realised it's the variety of the ride that does you the most good.

Get on the bike (I assume it's a mountain bike), select a low gear and take your time on the climb. In a month you'll be flying up there, and you'll be a damn site fitter!

I'm gutted I can't ride to work any more, only used to do it once a week because it took an hour each way, 11 miles each way but including some fairly impressive hills. This year I changed jobs, so it's the first year I haven't cycled it for about 5. Legs are like sticks and I get knackered climbing the stairs  I really must find the time to do something about it!

Also think of the rush you'll get on the way home - remember, what goes up must come down! 8)
