D9, do I, or don't I???

Post by ed209 »

I have a d8, and a d9, and one has to go! I am torn between the two and can't decide..............

The d8 is a 1.9td with 210,000 on the clock (genuine miles). Sherwood green, a rusty wing, dents all over, a leaky pas pump, leaky rocker gasket, bottom engine compensator knackered, hard suspension, and is noisy and slow. I do love the old girl though!

The d9 is a new one to me, 2.0 glx showing 62000 miles. Silver, lovely body work, nice interior, more toys. However, needs rear discs, air con compressor, has no service history, so looking at a cambelt for peace of mind. I hate the high clutch, but should get used to it.

What would you choose??

No brainer. D9

Clutch you will get used too and rear discs dont cost much. Compressor i think are about 300 could be wrong tho, but what ever it is its gotta be worth it for all the toys 8)

Am I right in thinking that the d9's are more troublesome than the d8?

I tried selling the d9 for several weeks for £1695, but no takers! Had it on ebay twice, and the bidding never got higher than £1400!!
I'd rather keep it than let it go for peanuts!

If I had cash to spend though, another d8 diesel would be my choice 8)

D8s tend to have problems with things dying of old age, like rubber parts (hoses, mounts, bushes, etc) rotting/perishing, pumps wearing out etc

D9s have expensive electronic problems due to the added complexity (without any real functionality gain) - and will in time grow to have the same problems the D8s have now

From those two, I´d go for the d9.The clutch is irritating, I know, and it won´t take too long ´til it´s done. At least this has been my experience from two petrol d9 6s. First time the clutch lasted for 123 000km and the second time around for 151 000. Those "toys" you mentioned, are usually the ones that tend to fail first. And they´re usually the most expensive ones to fix. However, the basic block in the 2,0 d9 will last a good while, if properly serviced. ON TIME. 8) And if the suspension is in good condition the d9 is a great ride..

I think if I'd known how complex the D9 was I wouldn't have bought it, although really I was out of options as I had a (relatively) expensive car I couldn't get rid of to trade in. In hindsight, if I'd had the option I'd have got a low milage 2,1 TD D8.

I think I'm with mjb on this one, try for a good D8, 2,1s are a bastard to work on so either a 1,9 TD or a petrol with lpg.

I think I'd sort the D9 out, it'll be easier to shift it and you might just as well have some pleasure out of it. (Btw don't breakers sell compressors?) Put them both up for sale but don't be in any hurry as this is a bad time of year to sell cars.

It's unfortunate about the d8, with the intergallactic mileage (sadly people think we're still driving fords that are dead at 100k) it's going to be a pain to sell too. Hopefully the D9'll go first, then you'll have some cash to play with.

The best price you´ll get out of the d9 is by driving it yourself.. 8)

...and letting go of the d8 before it turns into crispy bacon

Still, I agree with Steve that the best choice, if you´re into diesels, is the d8 2,1 td with low mileage. The question is, are there any left?

I'd stick with a 1,9 if I were him, I'd only be going for the 2,1 because I'd be unhappy with the power down-grade but in the UK there are all sorts of possibilities with the 1,9.

There are decent 2,1s left here: (ignore the silly price, all cars are like that here.)

Thanks for all your thought folks. keeping the d9 seems the best way to go, but its that damned clutch!! Everyone i speek to says they are high biting by design, but that just seems mental to me! I havn't driven the d9 now for nearly a month due to this, the lack of control makes me look like a learner driver, kangeroo-ing all over the shop!!

TBH the clutch shouldn't be that much of a problem, yes they're all high but it doesn't make the driving awkward. There could be a problem with yours?

I experimented with many seat positions to cater for the clutch and found that I brought the steering wheel right out towards my chest to compensate for the seat-to-clutch position. The seat is maybe a little further back than I would like but being electric in my case means I can luckily take advantage of an infinate number of positions.

Does your car "shake" when the clutch bites? Does the clutch pedal feel heavy? Does it have a sort of a "racing clutch" -feel? If the answer to any of those questions is yes, then the clutch in your d9 may be at its "terminal stage".. :(

The very last act is that the cluch pedal will stick to the floor and you´ll have to force it up with your foot. Has happened to me goin 120km/h on a motorway... The other one never got to up that point, luckily.

Also try this: Let the car run on idle and put the (so called) handbrake on. Press the clutch pedal for an inch or so with your hand. If you feel it vibrating heavily, it´s a goner....soon.

Oh, and sorry, didn´t mean to increase the paranoia. It´s just that I´m with Welton on this one. Shouldn´t be THAT awful.

d8? :cheesy:

Cheers bargain, you've just made me chuckle a whole lot in an otherwise very crap week.

Thank you.
