What Springs will fit the 6...

Post by PugOFwar »

Hi all,

Im desperately looking to drop the 6 by 40mm (minimum) or 60mm if possible. What if any springs can i use? Will 306 springs fit for example?

Any info/help would be greatly appreciated :D

Thanks all 8)

-Cobra -60mm/-50mm

.........for the looks

- Koni or Kw coilovers

........for good quality and reckless money-spending

-Weitec -60/-40

........a budget choice with the look aspect

-Eibach springs (-30) w/ good gas shocks (Koni etc.)

........for the drive of your life

And this was a straight quote from my post in the "Bodywork" -section...

I don´t think that the 306 (front) springs will fit. And I wouldn´t even consider such an option.

You´ll definately need a new set of shocks too if you´re about to lower that 60/40. Those springs will eat away the original ones in no time....

I might be wrong about the 406 with this, so bear with me but I understood that in about 9 out of 10 cases where cars have been 'dropped' then it has not been done 'properly' taking averything into account.

Bargain has said about the need for new dampers to go with the lowered springs.

Many cars also require shorter drop links, some require modifications/shims to re-align the geometry of the suspension and wheels etc. When you lower a car it can falsely 'load up' the anti roll bars without shorter drop links giving a really weird ride etc.

Some chav-charriots have such hard suspension that the wheels loose contact with the road on bumpy corners and make the handling worse!

This is true. And the main reason for this is in my opinion the bad quality cheap lowering springs ( which you can usually tell by just looking at the spring and feeling it. Thin ones with neon colouring suck in most cases  ), shocks and other suspension parts plus too much lowering. All these things added up and you´ll have the "kangaroo ride" for sure. Then there´s the point that some after market lowering spring manufacturers have got just one spring type that goes with every engine type, from 1.6 to 3.0 V6. Now that can´t be too good (different weight on the front axle). So it would be best to make sure that the springs you´re about to get have been properly tested to fit in whatever model it is that you want them on...

Then after the lowering you need to get the toe-in adjusted...That for sure affects on how the car handles..

The thing with the lowering in my opinion is... that with some quality stuff and reasonable lowering (talking bout 30-40mm max.)you will get some hmm.. new qualities to your car but with the same time you´ll lose some. At low speeds the car will definately get more uncomfortable and will feel "harder" but then again at higher speeds and on good tarmac the car will feel more steady and handle better. This at least has been my experience.

not true. arb droplink is attached to the main body of the strut and is not affected by the ride height. ride height is controlled in the spring. any decent uprated shortened damper will have the arb droplink bracket welded where the original was.

this is very true, though i would change the ARB links and bushes (for thicker/stiffer ones) at the same time as the harder ride will destroy them in no time

I just thought I'd throw this one in here to get a big communal >huh??< from you lot: Can I get L O N G E R springs for my D9 and what do I need to know/take into account? You know, things like steering geometry, availability of longer dampers and should I fit casters to the luggage bars.

I´ve been trying to solve this one out for quite a while...but no one seems to know....

even tried to e-mail the local dealer (haven´t heard back from them..... ), if there´s a sort of "rough road" -pack available for 6. For example Volkswagen has one for Golf IV variant. My dad´s got
one of those in his: longer springs (+25mm) and stiffer shocks. He needed them cos he´s always dragging his silly ATV to his summer place and back (250km weekly) ...

Will sort it out, Steve...

James, c´mon help the guy out!!!

For me?

Service box lists both rough terrain and heavy duty suspension for the D8 but only heavy duty for the D9 :( It doesn't list different dampers though.

I'm only half-serious but I would be very interested to find out. Hell, if I could give the D8 one foot of ground clearance (30 cm to you dear chap) I'd keep it and flog the '9!!

I´m pretty sure by now that there isn´t any after market product for either d8 or d9....

But for every VAG -product there seems to be one....

...and now that I came to think of it...trying to contact the dealer in car issues is like in a war -movie: you´re sitting on the beach, bleeding, waiting for the copters but the copters won´t come... :(

No surprises there then, I talked to the dealers in Zagreb about the springs on my D8, I drove it into their workshop, they looked at it and... clueless. That's why I ended up measuring 406s in carparks. Hey, I'm a forigner, everything I do here is strange...
