406 Coupe

Post by xplosiv »

Hi,

Right i am looking at getting a newer car.

I have a 51 plate HDI saloon but things are going to start getting expensive. SO i was looking at a 406 coupe getting old now but still look good and my budget is no more than 6K.

I was thinkgin of the 2.2L version but i am not sure on : -

a) Insurance cost
B) If the pug petrol engines are rubbish or not

what do you all think ?

Or can you suggest another car

PSA petrol engines are *wonderful*!

The only thing to avoid is a 3.0 V6 with an auto box cos the box can't take it :)
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Strangely enough this is what i have been thinking.

I think the 2.2 petrol is quite a good engine only problem is they are pretty rare, they make the 2.2 HDI look common!

Not sure about the insurance i think the are bit cheaper that the v6 (160 bhp v 210) best thing to do is to do a few online quotes which will give you a idea of cost.

Also worth ringing your current insurance before you buy one to make sure you can change it over to the coupe. I got bitten by this when i got my 406, insurance wouldn't insure me on my current policy had to wait about 3 weeks for the policy to run out, or pay £1500 ( 2* what it should cost) for a new policy with out lossing a years no claims. Needless to say i'll never use them again and was considering putting a compliant in when they sent me a quote for the 406 for £1000 when the policy did run out!

In Finland they sold 2,2 petrol "sport" sedan 406 (also the coupé was available), and it´s got that same engine. On finnish forum there has been talk about some EGR problems with that engine, otherwise I think it´s quite reliable. However, the pot ain´t a rocket, so to speak. To have driven one sedan with a 2,2 I couldn´t tell the difference to my 2,0 lump. So I don´t know where the extra 10-15bhp have gone!?

I would go for the 3,0V6.

Insurance costs are another matter of course....

Hi

There is of cause the 407 saloon 2.0L HDI I can get one with only between 22-40K on the clock for between 6-7K. But I really did not want another diesel they just cost too much to fix and have far too many complex items on them that seem to break regularly.

You just have to look at the forums for VW/Merc/BMW/PUG etc all the common rail units seem to have problems and cost tonnes to fix. But patrols seem to be much more reliable and costs a hell of allot less to fix. So the saving on fuel is just not justified.

I was getting a new diesel it would not be a pug one as they are slow compared to FORDS/VW/in fact all of them. The 406 2.0L only gives 136phb where as the VW 1.9 gives 140 (something)

So which car to get, i need something that looks nice so that is the golf and passat and focus out of the window already (cos they look boring and ever f**kers got one. Oh and i need a roof rack to take kayaks 

Not worth mentioning, Steve, cos I wouldn´t drive the car at all. I would just sit and watch it and let out deep sighs. Maybe every now and then I´d pop the hood and do whatever it is that Welton is doing with his engine bay.. 8)

Hi,

I think it is looking like a 407 HDi 2.0L with low ish mileage. I am guessing the HDi still has the following problems: -

DMF
EGR
Low Pressure pump
MAF sensor problems
etc

The 406 coupe looks better but the 2.2L will cost a fortune to insure and the 2.0L is slow. and a good coupe with 40K on the clock costs the same as a 407 2.0 HDi 136bhp with only between 20-40K on the clock.

first of Fords are absolute shite, the theiving bastids also got there diesel engines from PSA so i dont know how you can say they are faster, PSA HDi's were never intended to be powerful or fast, just extremley frugal and emit bugger all emissions, which is far more than VAG can do, yes they do have 130-150bhp, but do they do 60mpg? no, 45 if your lucky, do they emit arround 150g/km of co2, no more like 190g/km
as for reliability, the VAGs are no better if not worse, the PUMPE-DÚSE diesel engines dont go beyond 150k, when they do, they sound like there about to break, they cost HUGE ammounts to fix when the PD system f*cks up, which it regularly does, they also belch out plumes of black smoke, also all VAG diesel engines have dodgy DMFs aswell,

my advice: buy a D8 exec 2.1 td estate plenty of power, much faster than a HDi 110, the only issue is they rattle like mad

agree with everything james has said on pump duese diesels. one other trait with them is that they suffer from terrible vibration, enough to seriously piss you off in the long run. and there as laggy as arse.
