SP30 - Speeding / Exceeding the speed limit

What is the offence?
Driving on a road (non motorway) exceeding the speed limit
Maximum points and fine

* Fine not exceeding Level 3
* Endorsement with 3-6 penalty points
* Discretionary disqualification (depending on the speed)

How it tends to work

If you are doing more than 30mph over the limit you are likely to be disqualified from driving. This will depending on a variety of factors including

* Speed
* Road conditions
* Weather etc.

If you are offered a fixed penalty, and you are guilty then you may be best to accept this. Your licence will be endorsed with minimum number of penalty points and the fine is likely to be less than if you go to a court and are found guilty.
Defence

There are three possible defences:

* Not me gov! i.e. you were not driving the car
* You were not speeding, or
* you were driving an exempted vehicle in an emergency (i.e. a Police Car).

Evidence

The prosecution evidence must come from at least two sources, eg

* The Police car's speedo
* Radar gun
* VASCAR
* In the case of a speed camera it will be the speed detector in the unit and the two photos showing your position against the disctance lines
Thanks,
Nick

You're allowed 6 points before they start to clobber you on the insurance (from experience! :oops: )

I would have thought 73 in a 50 would be more than 3 points.

For my 3 points CU80 my insurance will go up £38 on renewal.

If he was doing 80+ then they'd be after his license. At the end of the day. it'll all come down to what he says, how much the coppers over-exagerate and if the beak got to see Madam Whiplash the night before...

100 in a 70 is a ban, which is about 43% over the limit.
43% over a 50 limit it 71. So to me, I recon 73 could be a ban.

Hmm i hope not he told me at the road side 3 points and £60 fine and gave me a fixed penalty notice saying £60 fine though on the ticket it says sp03 rather than sp30 so not sure that means is it a local police force code ot something

There is no such code so you could be cheeky and try for an invalid speeding ticket :twisted:
To be honest though, the speed you were doing I would take the 3 points and feel very lucky!

You would get an instant ban here - anything over 130 in Australia is license losing territory! There used to be a technicality that you could do 110 + 45 so 155kph before losing your license on freeways but they closed that!

That kinda speeding here would result in 6 points (out of 12) and a $500 AUD fine - pretty hefty. I'm only on a half license due to my age.... :evil:

NEWS FLASH....

When you recieve the paperwork from the authoraties you have the option to attend some sort of "safe driving" course in a classroom as opposed to having 3 points on your licence, you still have to pay the fine though.
A colleauge of mine who is an ex-traffic cop (tut tut) got caught in Lincolnshire by a mobile unit (he lives in Liecestershire),
he took the course and kept the points off his licence....best thing is, for him, even though he paid £60 fine, he is in pocket
because he could claim mileage for having to travel to Lincoln for the course!!!

I've heard of this, my brother in law did one and he lived in scunthorpe. I wonder whether it is country wide or only select counties?
