I think i made the right decision....

Post by mbell666 »

Yesterday i decided to go up to Peterborough to view a couple of 406 coupes.

Just as i got to Peterborough i noticed the engine was making a very loud rattling noise (its been rattling abit since i had fan belt failure a few months ago). I pulled over, listen and turned it off. stuck my hand on to the crankshaft pulley, the problem was obvious, it was in more than one piece!!!

So i had to ring up the AA join on the spot (I did have joint RAC with the x which had expired, but haven't got round to sorting my break down cover as i don't use the car much now).

Anyway they recovered me back to Cambridge and I dropped the car off for new crankshaft. I've picked it upto day and they given me the old one (see pic attached) which is in 3 pieces and would have been more very quickly.

Anyway i think i made the right choice in stopping, one cylinder head rebuild is enough! In summary good friday wasn't good for me and i am nearly £400* quid out of pocket on a car i am trying to sell, but there again the thing could have gone and taken the engine out so it could be worse.

Had to pay £170 + vat for the pulley from stealers and the AA was £120 + years membership.

The cars had rattle since the fan belt incident its just been getting worse. I did take it back to garage who said fanbelt tensioner?!?!?!

Pretty surprised they didn't notice the pulley, they reckoned they stripped the car back so should have had it off again. If i had though it was the pulley it would have got changed!

Anyway the rattle has gone now :), just a shame about the hole in the new car fund :(
