back from the dead... well not qute

Post by jameslxdt »

hi all,
aint been arround for a while due to doing stupid ammounts of overtime at work,
hows everyone and there pugs going, after months of arseing arround with the passat i finally found the problem giving me no power, there was a break in the wiring harness for the charge presssure control valve, i finally got it repaired today and all back together, and on the test run all seems well, plenty of power, boosting up well, then BANG!!!
the cambelt snapped
so i got the car dragged home, and its pretty well mullerd, all 20 valves are gone, so its going to car heaven as i cant be botherd to put a new engine in, so im in the market for another car though im not sure what
anyone got a 406 for £10

Bluddy hell James, do you ever get any luck with cars???

The D9's fine thanks, I had my bro and his family over last week, I drove all over the place, clocked up about 1,500Km and it didn't miss a beat, I was getting some good economy on the motorways and we only nearly all got killed twice. The funniest bit was when we stopped to fill up at this manky looking garage with 2 ppumps, the pump was taking an age and we'd put it down to it being knackered until the guy came over and pointed out I'd parked on the pipe

The downside is the jobs I had to do were piling up and the moment they went my other half had volunteered me to retile, rewire and replumb her kitchen and only allowed me a week to do it in :x , so nothing still got done. It was going to plan, old tiles chopped off, electrics all channelled in (3 phase makes it so much more interesting  ) and plumbing moved to the other wall complete with drain (only one flood this time  ) but this morning I woke up in agony, I've done my back again so I can do absolutely sod all, even putting my shoes on is a bitch :(

i stripped it down a bit further, it seems the belt shredded at the crankshaft end, the tensioner is still intact, im tempted to put a belt on it and see if it goes

Sorry to hear that about the Passat

Hope you can stick around a bit more regular soon (we've been dishing out some right dodgy advise in your absence)

That sounds a bit too optimistic :? . Still, what have you got to loose? Just the cost of the belt and time

James! Oh dear, that Piss-at didn't last long did it? Why has the belt snapped? Faulty or was it long overdue?

I sold my 406 now, but it went for decent money - I think down to leatheary bits. Now got myself a 2005 Accord i-CDTi, which I love, but really needs a new sound system, so that's my next project :)

well i got it stripped down last night
like this:

Image

only to find the belt had been changed, why had it failed? the exhaust cam had seized, i managed to free it off without snapping the cam, i eventually got it all timed up and tensioned, went to start... no compression whatsoever
the belt only cost me £20 so thats not so bad, now i just dont know what to do with it, it at least needs a new cylinder head, but i wont know if i need pistons till i take the head off, i really dont know if i can be botherd with it anymore

Cylinder head: one from the scrappies then flog it.
Engine: car crusher time. Then again, a "new" lump from the scrappies is probably the quicker option, if a tad more costly.

It wasn't a bad looking car so maybe it'd be worth fixing, if only to get your money back.

I notice only one cam sproket when I thought this was a 20v :? maybe the other cam is chain-drive?

Carry on.....

inlet cam is driven by a chain at the back of the engine

its quite simple to get it like that, only about 12 bolts/screws, drain the rad, remove the bumper with headlights, then unbolt and remove lock carrier
im going to take the head off on sunday to check the extent of the damage
