Kitchen door soft close dampers fitted

Post by Welly »

Well my life is now complete 8)

Do your Kitchen doors bang? (especially at the hands of an unsympathetic woman/kids?)

I kept seeing "soft close doors" advertised on telly etc and wondered how they work - so on my travels (when I wonder off in diy stores) I noticed a small hydraulic damper was fitted to some types.

Tracking them down on the interweb I found the company that sells them (direct dampers) contacted them myself instead of going through stupid ebay and bought some of them for my (sorry, our) house.

They come in 3 flavours - a cheap basic mid-range one, a high - grade one and the "blum" top of the range. I bought 10 high - graders and 5 blums.

They take a bit of experimenting with because the door hinges all wear differently in the kitchen and so not all the doors have the same closing power etc so you have to position the damper to suit each door until you're happy with the closing
action.

They literally "catch" the door just before it slams and then dampen the action to a nice close

Here's one on a vertical edge tucked up high

Here's one on a horizontal

A "blum" recessed to a drawer (the blum has a softer action)

A blum recessed because this door prefered it

It cost me £15.00 and took 2 hours to do 13 of them and I reckon it's made the world of difference :cheesy:

It's funny, a minute ago I didn't know they existed and now I need 2 kitchen's worth :frown:

That's odd too, I tend to wander off myself though. Most of the stuff here's so different I like to spend ages wandering around the big diy stores to see what they've got. Then I suppose I do wonder...

What's the russian jet? It's not a mig-29 because the elevators are wrong, so I was thinking su-27 but it's missing the lump between the exhaust nozzles...

How big is it? Surely something that small can't have a jet inside?

Your'e right mj its a su-27 and its missing the lump cos it was left off (1 less thing to break)
it's a 32in wing span and its powered by 2 ducted fan units that i am in the process of ripping
out because it was fitted with brushed as opposed to brushless motors when it arrived, hence
it flies like a fookin brick thats if you can get it up :P :P

what it hopefully will fly like  http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=kJiWjB5gjVY

Are you seriously suggesting that a pair of those diddy little motors will get one of those things airborne?!?!?

Have you seen the giant RC aircraft that do the rounds at airshows (usually just before the main flying display)? Saw a model of the Avro Vulcan the other year and it sounded and flew just like the real thing. Was quite impressed...

When I'd backed up enough to be able to see, a workman appeared to be wrestling with one of the chimney pots as the other workman looked as if he was holding the brickwork together on the chimney
They've took the stack/pot off and leant it horizontally behind the brickwork and have gone back to felting and lathing the roof.
   They shouldn't be anywhere near the chimney pots! (Unless it was falling off anyway!)
You should have lead flashing tied into the brickwork of the chimney stack to prevent leaks down it but usually you chop away the mortar around the base of the stack, bash in your lead and re-point it. Very strange! :frown:

Hey Welly, cool dampers! 8)
Seriously, they're a brilliant idea, especially when every member of the household likes to slam doors
