News in Croatia? Umm, let me see, Croatia has declared a state of crisis over the gas being shut off from Russian, there's 3 weeks of gas reserves left if people are careful and the government are currently negotiating a supply from Italy (which they will ship in by balloon, presumably); all shops will be shut on Sundays exept for the tourist season; everyone will have to pay another 80Kn a month for health insurance, unless they don't mind paying for consultation, 'scripts, hospital treatment, operations etc. (yeah, I'm wondering that too); there's now a smoking ban in public buildings, you can't even smoke in the doorway, in July they will also ban smoking in bars, restaurants and cafes, who will all go broke (just another example of the HR government trying to brown-tongue their way onto the EU gravy train); the local mayor has been sacked, presumably for incompetance and corruption; Slovenia is continuing to block Croatia's entrance into the EU (nobody I talk to thinks joining the EU is a good idea so this is a good thing).

Re: US boy takes car in school dash
Oh, well that is news I suppose.....boring, but it is news
Where we live here ALL our high street shops are bust and closing down, no-one's got any work and we're in the doo-doo.
In other news though they are proposing to cut interest rates to 1.5%
(my mortgage has come down to £250.00 per month from nearly £400.00 last summer).
It's all ok though cos they've decided to dust off the old money printing machine and print off some more for us

Yeah, I heard something about printing off money, I thought it was a joke though. Every other country that's tried that's economy has gone down the plug hole, it's what Germany tried with the Mark before WWII and they ended up having to carry wheelbarrows of the stuff to the shops just to buy a loaf of bread. Inflation was so nuts people needed daily pay rises to keep up with it. Ah well, good luck with that.

I was wondering if these cheap interest rates will have an effect on the Rent market? won't tennants want cheaper rent now that mortgages are cheaper?

Yes, we will want cheaper rent. Will we get it, probably not! Estate agents have to make money some how, especially as they aren't selling any houses.
The rent on my one bed flat is more that twice your mortgage! Need to watch the rental market, if prices come down then it may be time for a chat with the landlord!

Going back to Steve's original thread, you've got to admire the lad's determination to get to school.

Re: US boy takes car in school dash
rental prices have been falling for the past 18 months or so. I'd say at least a quarter of all properties (in my area) on rightmove that have been for rent over a month have dropped at least £50-100/mo. Landlords are getting desperate!
Even funnier are the top end rentals. You can now get £2500/month places for under £1500/month

<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
