I am back! And looking for a new car...

Post by Captain Jack »

Hello,

Well, my Honda is now history (whoohoo!) as I had a slight argument with a lamp post during the recent snowy days we had, rendering it written off. Externally, all it needed was a bonnet and a front grille, but allegedly, it needed a new suspension, new bumper, cross member, radiator, condenser, blah blah blah.... who cares... Oh, and on a non-accident note, it needed a new turbo to the tune of 2 grand and a new master clutch cylinder. So much for Japanese reliability.

Anyway, since I have to take my crappy loan Civic back tomorrow, I have no car and need a new one. Naturally, I am looking at Peugeots again, as my old one has been an absolute angel to me. My dad's 106 diesel has also been relatively trouble free. I have a total of £3000 to spend and not a penny more. What are my chances of getting a decent low-ish mileage 406 HDi 110 for that money. 2.2L 136bhp coupe is better, but I know reliability on that is pretty poor compared to 110. Not too bothered about the spec but the more toys, the better :) Other potentials are 306 HDi's and maybe even a 307 if any are available.

I know I am going to get kicked for this, but I notice that there are a lot of fairly decent Mondeos in the above price - is it worth looking at these?

No doubt will be back for more :)

They make good lawnmowers tho...

Welcome back CJ!!! Glad it was only the Honda that got mangled and not your good self :cheesy:

3 grand??? You after buying a fleet?? Umm, what about an HDi 90 with a remap? Feedback all seems very positive and less to go wrong...

I can't stand Frauds myself but some people seem to love 'em. I guess you should have some test drives. They have their own problems (check out Honest John, oh look, they even have a troublesome DMF  ) but I suppose one advantage is the breakers are full of 'em (best place really :P )

Yeah, a remap on HDi 90 would also be considered. Will it be as quick as a 110? I do want reliability, though, so none of that DMF/FAP filter stuff please :)

i've just enquired about getting my 90 HDi remapped for €280 and i think i'm going to go through with it. The guy said he can get it to 125HP and increase economy. surely not eh?

Welcome back CJ. :D

For £3K you'll get a stunning 406. I've heared a viscious rumour that Neil's 2.2 diseasel coop is up for sale for 3.5, might be worth dropping him a line? I don't think he'll actually have the heart to let it go though

Hate to admit it but my next car is prolly gonna be a new Mundano, although I quite like them the real reason is that I don't like anything else at the moment, well nowt I can afford anyway....

Nowt wrong with it fella, and I'm not thinking of changing imminantly. In fact I don't want to change it at all really, but sooner or later I'm gonna have to get something more economical, doing lots of miles for work at the moment....

Plus the Mrs wants "us" to have a new car

Mmm. I'd like a change myself. Eventually. Would love to get some feedback on this remap business. I've read the posts with positive feedback but i'm afraid of destroying my engine and clutch

Dude, it's credit crunch time, everyone's desperate for a deal. Get round there with £3k cash and I reckon you'd be driving it away

CJ, I doubt that 52 plate exec's worth more than about 2.5k - some people just keep trying it on. If you scan Autotrader for a few weeks you'll see what I mean.
BTW late 110 HDi's have DMF's & FAP's too, so I think you're just as well having a 136, but then I'm baised.
It really is a buyer's market & will probably get more so as the depth of the mess we're in becomes obvious....
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Yeah, I dunno... not finding many decent ones under 3k. Many have done astronomical miles... this one looks OK but quite old. Only 36k miles though

pffft there's really no point spending more than a grand on a 406 - the more you spend the worse they seem to get :cheesy:
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

I would be tempted to put a £2300 offer on that blue one. If they refuse, well, its no big deal.
