The front end is the same across saloons and estates, that's your easiest way to tell.
The changeover was at T-reg, early '99.

D8 = original design
D9 = facelift

The facelift happened during 1999, so cars in the T and V reg range could be either a D8 or D9. There are also cars known as D8.5s, which are weird sort of "hybrid" cars. Some look like D8s but have D9 engines (like Plod's car), some are D9 at the front and D8 at the back (there's at least one of these kicking about Aberdeen).

Yours will definitely be a D8 - the SRi was only available with a petrol turbocharged engine in D8 form. The D9 version of the SRi was powered by the same 2.2 litre naturally-aspirated direct injection engine that is in my Coupe.

Really, the biggest visual clue is the radiator grill - if it's a honeycomb mesh, it's a D9. If it's horizontal bars, it's a D8. The D9 also has wider headlamps than the D8.

Also look at the boot of the car - the D8 has a horizontal groove through it, below the boot lock. The D9 doesn't have this groove. The D9 also has a body-coloured strip splitting the light clusters.

Take a look at my poor old D9 saloon by following the link on my sig. Then compare it to your own car, you should see the differences I am talking about.

The Coupe also has a D8 and D9 version, but the differences are a lot more subtle (i.e. the D8, apparently, doesn't have a high-level brake light, but the D9 does). Not much else visually different - and that's probably a good thing, because it's always been a gorgeous design 8)

my 1997estate has a high-level brake light so does that mean its "hybrid" 8)

i think the 3rd brake light in the old fiat brava actually spelt out 'brava' on it, made an otherwise sh*t car still just as sh*t.

theres a 5pot in the fiat coupe and that does sound quite pure, but then i had the honour to be overtaken by an alfa gtv6 wow them things sound better than ferraris. The italians in the perfect car should be left to sort out the noise, but not the looks after the guilieta.

The noise of the 2.2 petrol engine in my Coupe is great - slap it into 2nd gear and plant the pedal firmly into the carpet, the engine has this wonderfully rich growl, and the car just shoots forward. It also doesn't give a toss about hills in these conditions; driving up the Berriedale Braes yesterday (hairpin bends with 13% - 15% inclines) was absolutely sublime.

Seriously, the video above doesn't do the Braes justice; the views are spectacular, and you go down so far, and then climb so far, that your ears pop. (also, if it were my video, I'd also have chosen a different sound track)

i cant hear the engine because of the music, i suppose if i was doing the video with my car id put music on because really a diesel isnt an engine you want to listen to, it might be torquey and it might be economical but it doesnt have the right sound. That road really looks like a good road for driving. Plenty of bends, but yet still wide enough so you dont need to care about cars on the other side which is the problem with the roads here in ni, all too narrow or potholed, any that are not are called motorways, apart from the odd exception here and there.

highlander wrote:Yours will be a D9 - the HDi engines were never fitted to the D8 (though some D8 owners have retro-fitted an HDi to their car)

Also, the D9 came in late on in the year 1999. My car is one of the early D9s (some D8s are V reg, some D9s are V reg).

I think I have a D8 110 HDI? It's a T plate 99 with early grillecetc....

The last of the D8s had the HDi in 1999, although I'm not sure if they're true D8s, rather than the lesser-spotted D8.5

i suppose the d8.5 was the testing car for the new hdi engines, and its as well they worked good, otherwise we would never have got the hdi engines.
