Bloody Estate Agents

Post by mjb »

Been trying to get a new house for the last few years, and finally managed to get to the application stage for one. Great. Need to give a month's notice on this place (and save some cash) so I say I want to move 1st June so the rent's comfortably aligned with getting paid.

Problem. The £100 fee only keeps the house for 4 weeks. WTF? They expect you to hand your notice in at your current house before getting the go-ahead to move into the new place? Anyhow, after a load of arguing, I manage to arrange it so I can move in (and pay the deposit and first month's rent) on the 29th May, then have a standing order going out on following 1st of the months...

Great. So I pay the fee and go back to work. By which time my boss has had a reference form faxed to him  ...which means... my landlord's probably got one too

There is NO WAY they've done the credit check on me in that time!

Now here's how I can see this panning out:
1. I get a phone call telling me I've failed the credit check
2. I get a phone call from my landlord saying she's coming round to take some pictures "for her records"
3. I spot my own house on rightmove
4. I get a phone call from my landlord saying she's coming round to show some people around
5. I get a phone call from my landlord saying she's coming round to show some people around
6. I get a phone call from my landlord saying she's coming round to show some people around
7. I get a letter in the post giving me a month's notice for termination of my rental contract
8. ...f**k knows :(

Urgh well I've had a morning of the landlord phoning (the voicemails just say to phone her back, but she sounds really pisssed off) and knocking on the door... Nice.

Oh blimey, can you tell her you were just making enquiries and someone's jumped the gun so shove it in the bin? And then get the agents to resend it to her when you know it's going through?

I've got a feeling getting the reference form was the death knell for my tenancy here whatever I say or do

Which is a bitch, because I've just got my post and found the estate agents have piled on LOTS of extra charges. It's going to cost closer to £1500 to move instead of the £800-1000 I was expecting. That's on top of the rent. Dunno if I can afford to move now, even if I manage to pass the credit check. f*ck. There's a serious chance of having to put the cats into a cattery, my stuff into storage, and myself into a bedsit

my god I passed the credit check  :cheesy:

Just waiting for the current landlord's reference then I'm moving in! :cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy:

The new place has got a nice garage too, so I'll be able to tackle my clutch soon :) It'll nice to be able to work on my car indoors, or indeed anywhere without having to worry about my tools getting nicked by the local yoofs... There's also a tap on the wall adjacent to the driveway, so I think I'll be investing in a pressure washer 8) Finally I think things may be looking up!

Great stuff!

I had a credit check done on me recently and thought it would be crap but it wasn't at all, I don't usually have loans and credit so thought this would go against me but it seems not.

Pressure washer = Karcher. Fin. Hey, you can get some 'snow foam' then like me :cheesy:

Great news, Matt!

I just moved myself to London (appartment - renting). I am also renting my own house out back in Wiltshire so I've experienced estate agents on both ends of the stick. And yes, they are all a pain in the arse :x
