1st pair of glasses woes...

Post by Welly »

I've had an eye test at D&A recently and they said I have 'distance' vision and duely prescribed me a prescription for some lenses. Not liking their frames I went to specsavers with me prescrip' and ordered a pair of rather fetching Osiris frames and ordered the lenses with the 'coating' treatment (anti-reflect).

Thing is I've been struggling to get used to them! I came out of the shop on Saturday with me bins on and felt like my feet were walking under the pavement and I had shrunk about a foot in height :? I also kept kinda stubbing my feet on things and generally started to feel sick :x

This morning I popped them on whilst driving and the vision was a bit worse in a way and my circular dials on the dash looked like they were egg-shaped :?

I realise one has to get used to these things and this is my first ever pair but should it be awkward like this at first? at the moment I've got them in the box on me desk

I am guilty of squinting over time and they said I've squished my eye balls into a funny shape (astigmatism?) so focus in not pin-sharp in fact looking at this text on screen looks kinda shadowy. They said my glasses will help relieve strain and the vision will improve in all areas.

Can anyone offer any advise on this?

I'm sorry I can't help Welly, luckily I don't need them yet! Does sound strange that everything is elongated though :?
My wife wears specs, I'll ask her later.

As all Volvo owners are safety conscious, (most wear seat belts & crash helmets while watching telly, I've heard), perhaps you need a prescription visor?

I've worn specs for the last 41 years (since I was 14).

You will have some problems at first, dizziness and blurring, I had this when I tried varifocals....they are a nightmare....I gave up on them pretty quick.

I also tried bi-focals for the short vision and distance, again, they were a nightmare, I couldn't get used to them, I got exactly the same as you Welly, tripping over, blurry short distance vision.

One thing I would say, my experience of Specsavers is not good, they have a nasty habit of getting your prescription wrong, they did it three times in a row, I got so annoyed that they gave me a refund on my lenses.

They fitted a wrong lens in my left eye, then the right, then both of them.Needless to say, I don't use them any more.

Strangely enough, I have an appointment thursday this week at Vision Express for my two year test.

It takes time to get used to them - Wear them around the house to get the whole jist of what they are like! Better to do that rather than strain at work/in the car and end up with a nasty headache or feel woozy over them!

We have spec savers here in Aus - Never dealt with them? Always OPSM or Laubmann and Pank!

I've had glasses since 2006 but I don't have to wear them all the time - D&G frames FTW! :cheesy:

Yeah Welly, the strange feeling while walking is perfectly normal. Your brain's still trying to compensate for your bad eyesight even though it doesn't need to, and it'll be up to a couple of days before you get used to it

They did some tests once which involved putting goggles on people which caused them to see a mirror image - ie, left is right and right is left. After a while, the subjects got used to it and could function normally, but when the goggles were removed, they once again lost all sense of coordination for a while

Sorry Welters old chap, couldn't resist and all that.

I started wearing glasses for reading about 10 years ago & experienced the same sort of thing if I moved my head around, (never mind walking, which was much worse). As the others said, you do get used to it most times & it becomes normal. I've had the wrong prescription once or twice too & haven't been able to adapt. If your instinct is telling you you can see better without them, then I'd be inclined to trust it - go back & complain.
Recognise that's a tad awkward as you got your eyes tested at one place & your specs at the other, but one of them has not delivered the service you paid for. You could get them to repeat your eye test to confirm the result and/or get the other lot to prove they have interpreted your prescription correctly.

First eye test I had was an Asda's freebie - took the prescription away, say it was for two different lenses, got a pair of each type from Poundland & swapped the lenses

I think that'd be wise Welly.

I wore glasses for years before progressing onto contact lenses. It does take a while to get used to them. Even now when I take the lenses out and have to put glasses on (very rarely) it's really weird, changes all your perspective, affects your balance... can be quite disconcerting, but you will get used to it.

I'd 100% get back and get the prescription checked out. Ive worn glasses since i was a young man, and occasionally they make the lenses up wrong and you can tell straight away.

Yeah, it was driving that bothered me because if I can't judge things as well then my driving's gonna be to pot too.

Trouble is I'm dead busy at the moment and 'trying out' glasses is wayyyyy down in the list.

Dissapointed to be honest and I'm thinking that there's draw backs to wearing bins and this is why people get contact lenses! maybe I'll be one of those who can't tollerate looking through glasses like this?

Yeah deffo go back.

Ive been wearing glasses for driving for about 10 years now. When i had an eye exam and new glasses from Vision Express last Febuary i wasn't happy with the close-to clarity of my vision, i found it somewhat weird looking at the dials, wing mirrors, and when passing cyclists and parked cars was a little vague and unnerving.

I went back, did it all again and this time they slightly toned down the strength of the lens so distance was not quite as sharp, tbh i couldn't tell any difference in distance clarity but bingo my close-to sight was bang on.

No more knocked off cyclists and my boss was happy not buying wing mirrors for the van. Everyone wins

Haha, Welly is old and blind :p

ATM my eye sight is perfect, but both my crumblies wear specs so I guess sooner or later I'll be joining the face furniture club too. Then you can all point and laugh at me :D

I always liked the laser eye surgery ads that promise "from £8m per eye"... always wanted to go in and tell them I can only afford to get one done :D

Anyway, if it's any help whenever my old man gets a new pair he always moans about them being weird. He tries not to wear them until me mum nags him in to doing it, eventually he gets used to them. He tried vari-focals but didn't get on with them, think he's on the bi-focals now. Point is Welly, you're not the only one. Good luck with it.

Had my eye test this afternoon, turns out my right eye has avoided serious damage from an infection I got in it whilst I was in hospital last July with my second heart attack, apparently, something has got "creased" but the optician said I was very lucky only to have that problem.

More expense for new glasses :frown: :(

I'll report my reaction to my new specs, when I get them.
