Another Convert

Post by Doggy »

My bro has finally joined the ranks of 406 ownership, having picked up this beast today:
Image
It's a 98 1.9TD SX estate - drives nicely & looks pretty good.

Unfortunately, he won't be joining the site as he's a complete tecnophobe - doesn't have a computer.

The car has a few of the 'standard' niggles, which I will no doubt try to work my way through

(Air bag warning light, fuel flap won't pop open without help, driver's window will only 'inch' up - moves about an inch & stops on each press. I'm sure I've seen references to most of these on here & will have a search, but if anyone has answers to hand, please let me know).

Previous owner disconnected the battery and didn't have the code for the head unit. I've told him to search through the handbooks etc. in case someone's written in in there, but failing that, any ideas? It's got the proper remote stalk & cd changer so would be nice to have working.

Re: the window inching. This occurs when the battery is d/c and the window forgets its positions. Have yer bro get comfy and wind the window all the way down, holding the switch until the relay clicks. Then within two seconds, wind it all the way up again. Once it's in the closed position, hold down the switch until it clicks again. Repeat entire process.

At least, that's the theory. Usually takes me about five minutes to get it to work ^_^

Wish I could buy an auto one of those, I know where I stand with the old diesels.

Air bag warning light - loose connection under the driver's seat (orange I think)
Fuel flap - use the clothes peg mod

Thanks for all your comments & tips :P

I was fairly sure the airbag would be the under-the-seat connectors, having sorted tham on my previous cistern. Unfortunately someone's tried before me and one of them's already disconnected and it isn't obvious wher it should be, (also largely explained by me not having sooper-dooper reading glasses to hand). We haven't managed to track down a D8 Haynes manual yet, so can anyone confirm the wire no.s / colours are the same either side of the connectors?

I'll try re-programming the window operation 8)

My bro wn't have anything to do with common rail diesels, 'nothing but trouble', (my last 120,000 miles or so being a fluke, apparently).

I drove the new pug home for him yesterday and to be honest, I grew to like it, even though I had to hold up my own left arm / shoulder and press something called an accelerator, all the time

Loads of Haynes on ebay, red cover for D8 flavour. Usually about a fiver + P&P.

Re: airbag connectors, had a look at wiring specs but can't see anything to do with airbags. Soz.

We've made some progress....

He's found the code & got the radio working, but so far hasn't managed to eject the cd changer mag.

He's managed to re-program the window & it's now OK 8)

The air bag's still doing its thang. I noticed a connector under the driver's seat, (green plug with 1 red wire I think), which was hanging loose & didn't have an obvious home, now he's found a similar one under the passenger seat. I'm guess these are for something his car doesn't have. Any suggestions welcome.

I expect I'll try joining them all without the connectors at the weekend - at least if the colours match.

Many thanks for your help peeps :D

I've got unused connectors flapping about under my seats. But the attachment got deleted, so I'm attaching it to this one too:
