Those 'simple' DIY jobs..

Post by Welly »

Our Cooker has been playing up and is generally a sh*t heap so I bought another one to replace it.

It's an electric built-under oven so looks part of the base units and plinth etc and they're all made to 'kitchen spec' sizes. I removed the old unit which came out on a kinda framework thing, swapped over the cabling, and offered in the shiney new one.... something was stopping the unit going fully in to it's cubby hole and I cheerfully thought "oh silly me, the cable must be slightly caught on something, I'll have a little look".......oh deary shitting sodding sh1t b'sturd....the new unit is slightly deeper than the old and clashes with the rising Gas supply at the back serving the Hob :x

I now have to dig-out the gas from the wall (plastered over a wall chase) and enough so I can get a tube cutter and my hand round it to make a soldered joint (que explosion here) remove the (enormous) neighbouring corner base unit for access and re-route the Gas supply to the hob, test and commission (Dad's altered the gas supply everyone) all to free up the 20mm needed for the Cooker space.

What a lovely job  I now need a day off, on my own, to acheive this properly and all my plumbing gear from the last house is missing/knackered so there's a huge list of fittings and tools first

The cooker is working but is only 3/4 fitted (que complaints and lack of understanding from Mrs Welly).

Any of your DIY efforts turned to sh*t like this?..........

Why on earth would you solder it?? You never heard of compression fittings?

Don't forget to bubble test it!

You may recall that I got the wife's car past its emissions test but in doing so broke the water pump. Fixed that, but ever since it's been pissing transmission fluid at the rate of about two litres a week. Now I'm scared to touch the thing in case the wheels fall off or the tank blows up.

A touch overdue? Seeing as how the catfood tiles there were available in the 70s...

Actually, that looks pretty straight forward - hack off the old board, make good, new board, tile, grout & seal.

I usually get that "oh no, I've turned my house into a fecking building site again" moment. Are the tiles meant to come off with half the wall still attached?

How does a broken water pump leak transmission fluid? And how does breaking it affect emissions??

Don't really like compression fittings, especially as the elbow will become buried in the wall for eternity :|

Anyhoo it can be 'fun' soldering on a recently isolated gas main :supafrisk:

Nice job on the shower room there, and Teamy :cheesy:

A lot of developers are moving away from tiling now around showers and going for a plastic panel or even a laminated marine ply all-in-one piece with no joints (except the corners). They look nice too.

That's what the bathroom in the last house looked like... Landlady was, well you've heard the stories before, so I just duct taped up some black bags to the wall :D

Don't bury it then. You really need to disconnect it both ends and blow the gas out...

I much prefer soldered joints but I've always used compressions for messing with pre-existing gas pipes.

Why thankyou, yes, the tiles still didn't fall off...

I fecking hate tiling but I always seem to end up doing it :( Looking at how good the majstors ("experts" ha!) are here, I'll be doing it for the forseeable future. Next up: back terrace, 27 sq meters, not only sloping from end to end but curved up at the sides (only way I can do it without a massive fall). Also featured are two cracks where the house and garages move independently from each other (obviously the terrace is in the middle). It's gotta be tiles, every other idea I've had has been shot down in flames by the builders here ("timber decking? Ha, with the frost here that wouldn't last one winter!")

Welly,

Sorry to hear you are having a such a nightmare of a job.

I have a suggestion save yourself time and effort. Why not return the cooker and see if they have a simular size to your old one.

I had a simular issue with a fitted oven. Returned it paid a little more but fitted a treat :cheesy: :cheesy:

I'd go with soldered everytime, (but then I get my bro to do the soldering) :cheesy:

This was my beautifully tiled bathroom after we decided it had to revert to being a kitchen...

Now, nearly finished....

BTW Welly, if you think built under leccy ovens are awkward try one of these stewards

Failed emissions test --> Italian tune-up --> Over-revved engine due to me not being familiar with operation of automatics --> broken water pump --> radiator had to come off to give access to belt and pump --> transmission oil cooler d/c as it's integral with the rad --> trans fluid leaking --> leaky banjo unions sealed up with loctite silicon sealant --> now I can't work out where it's leaking from :(

On the subject of tiling, a friend told me that the tiling was fairly easy but it is the grouting that is an arse....thinking he was mad I commenced tiling my bathroom and then agreed with said grouting being an arse, even with my ubber grout applicator and grout sponge.

He also saw my diamond bladed water-bath table top tile cutter machine and burst out laughing saying it was a waste of time and money and I should use the traditional 'score back and forth' type thing and nibblers ....

Definately a task *well* worth pre-planning and working out the cuts etc. beforehand for a neat and uniform job.

But no more though Matt! :)
I've meant to ask you, how's the car going now you've been running it for a few weeks?

Is he having a laugh? Has he cut round soil pipes etc? Grouting is a piece of piss!

How does he cut curves out I wonder...
