Traditional home light bulbs being withdrawn?

Post by Welly »

I knew nothing of this till yesterday but apparently we can't buy incandescent light bulbs anymore? :?

WTF? those energy saving ones are shyte :x

I've got 3 fittings on a dimmer, a high/low bulkhead security fitting and other stuff that all requires traditional bulbs

What about those little 'golf ball' 25watters? I like those in table lamps for a 'touch' of soft lighting.

I wish I'd have known about this cos I'd have stocked up :frown:

You still can stock up Welters, I'm told there are no more being made but the shops will continue to sell them until stocks are depleted, so get out there and panic buy!! .

Apparently you can now get dimmable energy savers, but I think they're very expensive... as are the equivalent to the GU10 50W spots that we've got about 20 of!!

I thought it was just 100W bulbs that are banned at the moment?

You can get dimable energy savers, but they cost a fortune! I know this because the kitchen in my new house is supplied by 16x 60W halogen spots on a dimmer  and looked into how much it'd cost to get some dimable energy savers. Not happening!

The people who are really screwed though are those that need flashing lights

I went in a neighbours kitchen the other day and he had replaced all the GU10 50watters to LED's and they were sh1t - the room was kinda bathed in a blueish haze, couldn't see a thucking fing :?

They should never withdraw lamp types UNTIL they've got something equal/better to replace them with :frown:

And yes, I'll be stocking up allright

Yeah I tried the LED GU10s for the kitchen, 50W equivalent my arris! Bought them from China off eblag ('cos I'm tight  ) but the first one blew after a week and another 3 went within the first month, so ended up with a full refund. Plan B was a PIR switch, so at least the wife/kids can't leave the bloody halogens burning for hours with no-one in there!

as far as i know, they are phasing them out, 100w ones were stopped last year

60w ones this yr

40w ones yr after

then they will allll be gone, presume they are not doing it with halogen ones though, just the traditional  shaped ones with screw and bayonet fittings :)

Its funny how theyre doing this to persuade people tu use energy saving bulbs, yet at the same time my mums new fittings using 230v halogen bulbs, have 3 x 35w in each one, and there are two of them.

so 2x 60w @ 120w

has now been replaced by 6x 35w @ 210w

saving much energy that is hahah

They've phased out the bulbs "for domestic use", so you can still buy them for commercial use. (like your shed, your garage, etc) Check the electrical wholesalers.

Cool, I've got 'access' to a wholesaler through my job :supafrisk:

I still think it's crap that were expected to put up with poorly lit homes these little flourescents give out a nasty light imo.

But they'll end up in the rubbish nevertheless, and who's going to be calling in the hazmat team when one gets broken? Our descendants will be so pleased :(

I know, I'm amazed no-one has thought of it before, it's such a simple solution and would kill two birds with one stone - spray everything with nuclear waste! Everything will glow in the dark so there'd be no need for any sort of light bulbs, plus it'll remove the need for reprocessing. Simple, huh?

Totally agree, what a total pile of festering shyte :x
Have a hunt around for "Rough Service" bulbs; as they're for commercial use they can still be sold.
They last much longer too! Available in ES and bayonet, don't know about mini ES.
