Strange call from Sky TV....

Post by DaiRees »

So the phone rung a few mins ago and I answered it, typical "Mumbai Calling" Indian voice on the other end....

"This is a courtesy call from Sky television, could I speak to Mr Rees please?"
"Yup, speaking"
"Mr Rees you have a Sky box, right?"
"Yes"
"And is it working OK?"
"Yes"
"And you subscribe monthly, right?"
"Yes"
"OK this was just a courtesy call, thank you"... and he hung up.

I mean what the fek was that all about? Didn't seem to know anything about my account cos he didn't specify Sky Plus, didn't ask about the multiroom or broadband or anything else I have off Sky. Also didn't try to sell me anything else which was what I was expecting...

Something doesn't seem right! It just didn't seem to have the genuine Sky patter to it. Number witheld too. Or maybe I'm being paranoid?

If you ask me, it's one of these companies who will phone you from time to time, making you assume they're from Sky, and trying to sell you insurance against breakage on the digibox or dish.

Either way, I've knocked Sky Broadband and BT into touch as of today. I'm now writing this using my new talk talk broadband. Changeover has (so far) been faultless.

Smells like a new phishing scheme to me

Yeah that one in the link Jasper posted sounds similar. Maybe it is someone trying to find people to try to punt insurance to?

The only way it could be phishing is if they use that info to try to get further info, so I guess I'm gonna have to be extra careful for a while....

Dai, now that you've 'passed' stage one I'd expect another call soon from another place having had 'registered your interest'

We've been with Orange mobile at work for over 10 years and currently have a nice cheap deal going with them but I still get loads of calls from companies saying they are 'partners' with Orange and would just like to check some details and make sure we're happy etc.

...I allways f*ck them off but sure enough someone else calls later saying I was 'interested' in discussing the account etc etc. :x they also try to get you to tell them your mobile number so they can 'check' when the contract is due up

Their carefully scripted routine is designed to make you sound interested in what they have to offer, horrible people :frown:

Key words are...."I am not interested".

Aye, I've been with Orange for about 10 years, and about once a year I get calls from people claiming to be affiliated with Orange trying to get me to change my contract etc... Thankfully I have a nice little telephone policy - as soon as I've discovered I've been cold called, I say two words ("f*** off") and hang up.

I've never given anybody permission to use my phone number for sales calls, nor to pass it on to a third party, so as far as I'm concerned they're breaking OFTEL rules and/or the data protection act, so I don't want to waste MY time dealing with them nicely, but I do want to express my displeasure...

Of course when I'm having a really bad day I tend to take a bit longer to explain things to them in more detail...

I've allways fancied trying the 'sob story' to see what happens........

When you get the inevitable "how are you today?" you could say..... "Oh I'm really bad today, this morning I reverse-parked and killed my dog, then my gas boiler exploded killing the old couple next door, then my car broke down and because I was late for work I got sacked, then I got a call from the Hospital to say they made a mistaske and I've only got 21/2 days to live", but yes I'm fine thanks - how can I help? :cheesy:
