Free Volvo S40 anyone?

Post by Captain Jack »

Hello,

My mum's friend is offering an old P reg Volvo S40... for free. It's white and has seen better days. I think it's some poverty spec 1.8L jobbie.

Is it worth bagging it and selling it? What's it worth?

You got the reg CJ?

I'm a Volvo fan but the 1.8 combined cycle is 'only' 32mpg, damn my 2.3 T5 was combined cycle of 29mpg but offered better mpgs!

Amersham, Bucks

I haven't seen the car in flesh, so I have no idea what mileage it's done, what transmission it has, whether anything is broken etc... All I know is MOT is until March and tax until Jan.

It's basically a Mitsubishit (lack of) Charisma.

There's something funny about it's engine, direct petrol injection, can give trouble I think. But to be fair it won't be a bad car really overall.

Daft thing is it's worth £2,000.00 as a scrapager.

Direct injection? Trouble?? Really???

So they stuck the Mitsubishi GDI engine in the Vulva too did they? I wasn't aware of that. 'Twas only Mitsubishi and PSA who were brave (or stupid) enough to bring direct injection petrol engines to market.

Yeh its old the GDI lump.

Although parks suggest two variants of this engine, an 1.8 and 1.8i. I wonder if they are both the same GDi Unit.

Ive heard they do clog and need a good thrashing now and again.

Take it, strip it, drop it and track it.

The 1.8 had problems with throttle bodies, very expensive to fix, my cousin got rid of his because of it.
As Bruce says, they clog up in the inlet manifold, the guy used to own my mot garage had trouble with his from new, there was a recall on them.
Forte actually developed a cleaner to use in the fuel to help stop the clogging up, at least they looked into it.
Now that my son is a Volvo apprentice I can get technical info on Volvos from his tutor at the Volvo Training Centre, he is their technical guy.

Can't beat a feebie though :D
