Advice on treating rust (On bike!)

Post by teamster1975 »

Hi Everyone!

I've got a few mild steel brackets that have got surface rust, what would you say is the best thing to treat them with once I've cleaned them up?
Mainly brake cable hangers & an exhaust bracket.
Thanks for any advice!

DO you mean once the rust's cleaned off, or are you looking for something to do that?

Yes once it's cleaned off. I'll use a wire brush & wire wool to clean them up.

Some people swear by fish oil, but it stinks and doesn't last forever!

Some primers have a rust protectant built in? If you were going to paint the bits of course :)

Rust.resistant primer, followed by the colour of your choice. Hold on, you're in the UK still - powder coating!!

Wildly off topic - a link just for you :cheesy:

Duct tape and a big hammer. Fixes anything.

After my coupe's chassis needed slicing and welding up from the exposed part of the wheelarch, I gave it a bit of zinc primer and some paint, from Halfords and it seems quite happy so far
